Hi Big John, welcome to the Lead Adventure Forum :)

I've been painting up some 20mm forces for 1938BCW which we're played a few games with.  Still looking for a rulesset that will allow reasonable sized games in an evening, but I did umpire a 28mm 1938BCW game last week using To The Last Man which worked pretty well.  I'd certainly use the rules again, even though it was the first time I'd seen a copy last week!

I'm doing this in 20mm as well. Thinking of using Contemptible Little Armies, with some extras I found here and on the web. Arc of Fire is another possibility as it apparently has a list of most 20th century vehicles, very handy. 8)

I've used the LOTOW variant written by the guys who dreamt this all up, but I'm planning to try either a modification of The Great War or have a play around with my mate's C20th large scale skirmish rules that he's used for a couple of our club games to add a bit of "period feel".

I don't think the 'flavour'  of ECW3 suits contempible Little Armies. I fear that the scale of the battles with these rules will detract from the period and encourage a mega army mentality. what's the point in fielding your Cycle squadron when the other guy just fill up with tanks and Armoured Cars.

No, I suspect LotOW may do ratehr better, allowing you to add that personal touch to every trooper in your growing force. The scenarios are rather appropriate as well. Just reading the Irish wars books from Osprey and I get the feeling that 1938 wouldn't have been much different (only a bit more polite maybe) though I suspect if it had come down to it there would have been brother vs brother and lots of blood - us English can really do retribution and vindictiveness when we want to.

Anyway - enough wordage already. Need to get painting / gaming / expanding the Posse (sorry Civil Defence Force)

Easy enough to limit forces to 1 tank, etc with Contemptible Little Armies. Depends on what sort of game you want as well. A small raiding party attacking an isolated outpost would suit LotOW, larger battles would suit CLA.

Just to let you know we are now working on a set of rules (actually several sets) for a 1938 compendium, we hope to have some trial sets to play test before long (hopefully something by Claymore)
Cheers
