It's not always possible to have a dedicated, full-time painting area. A lot of painters with limited space or a somewhat-intolerant spouse find themselves in need of a portable, self-contained work area that also keeps all the tools of the trade handy and organized. I made myself one of those about a year ago. Great idea, very functional and I love the padded wrist supports. I have a closet with 3 shelves roughly the same dimensions as the 16"x20" frame where my station lives when I'm not painting.
I was so happy with this idea that I built another Painting Station for models and, using plywood, also made a portable workbench for building kits and other projects on.

Now the closet is totally committed to hobby stuff, which is totally the way it should be!

Important topic. Good article. I'm moving it to 'How to...' and making it sticky with the hope that other people can show us how they have addressed the problem with a need for a practical workbench within a limited space.

THat was a great little tutorial. Fairly inexpensive, practical and useful. I like the idea of placing the blades into something so that you can prevent or at least reduce the potential for injuries. Thanks for sharing. You just have to love this hobby and all the great people in it who share their wisdom and ideas!! Thank you to everyone else for their ideas too. The worst part is that their are so many great ideas, I want to do them all!!

Build Your Own Painting Station

Still using my Hyun-style painting station, even after building a nice big custom workbench. This is definitely the way to go to make good, organised use of limited hobby space.

A couple of pieces of advice;

1 - Always build the biggest painting station you have room for. You will fill it!

2 - countering rule 1, but still worth while repeating. Build your workstation to fit a cutting board, the self healing cutting boards that you can find in art stores, try A3 or A2 size and then you have a ready made work station as well as a painting station.

The good link is in the second message up. The one where I say: "I found it". Curryman did some reorganising of his blog, it seems, and some of his links went dead, but the content can still be found by those with a bit of Google-fu.
