Sometimes a plan just doesn't work.   :(

Though upside down and immersed in a green liquid it doesn't look all that bad.  lol

The good news is that the Spider's base turned out pretty good.

And while the big spider soaked, I had time to put together my Punga Miniatures' Goblin Spider Riders. These 6 models will serve as my warband's hearthguard.

I have GW spider rider minis and some printed spider rider minis. I've also shopped around quite a bit for spider riders and IMHO, these are best goblin spider riders currently available. Each has a lot of character and tons of fun detail.  Since they are cast in resin, and not injected mold plastic or 3D printed, the detail is very sharp and the skinny bits aren't ultra brittle. The casting was very clean and there were relatively few mold lines and very few casting defects.

My only complaint is that it is not always clear which legs go in which sockets. Punga provides some guidance by using triangle shaped and moon shaped pegs to let you know which legs go on which side of each spider's body. I don't recommend this kit to novice hobbyists and persons without a lot of patience.

These models were designed to be mounted on rectangular 'cavalry' bases. To get them to fit on 40mm rounds, I had to do a lot of cutting, repositioning, and pinning. I still need to finish the basing and patch up the gaps created by my reconstructive surgery on the legs.

I can check the Monster off my list.

I’m in the home stretch now. Last up are 6 mounted HG.

The monster spider looks great, the red really works.

The spider riders look very cool - can’t imagine how fiddly these must have been to construct in resin. I made a couple of plastic spiders which needed legs sticking on - and only made a couple of them!

So good! The paint and basing on biggy is great, and the Punga riders look very cool.

Progress.

I’ve washed off the mold release with hot water and dish soap, patched the gaps with GS, built enough painting rigs to paint two spiders and riders a a time, and finished painting all 6 bases.

Lovely work here.  I like the casually cameo from the extremely old citadel paint bottles in the photos.

I finished painting my Spider Rider mounted Hearthguard.

And whereas I really like the Savage Orc that I painted for my Warlord, I feel that a goblin chieftain riding a spider would, thematically, be a better Warlord for this warband. As such, I'm working on goblin hero on a giant spider. This one will be on 50mm base to better distinguish him as the WL.

Some of those 30 year old paint bottles still have good paint in them. They just don't make paint bottles like they used to... Which I am certain is intentional.  :-[

Those spiders and riders turned out very nicely indeed. Excellent work on them.

Whereas my giant deaths head spider Monster turned out 'ok', it doesn't really work as a truly eye catching centerpiece of the warband. As such, I'm thinking bout adding a second 'Monster' option to this warband. Since my warband is armed with bone and obsidian weapons and I've limited the metal items to copper or bronze ornamentation and jewelry, I picture my forest or jungle dwelling goblin tribe as a fantasy version of goblin Incas or Mayans. As such, I can see them using their magicks to animate a giant stone idol. This got me looking for cool STLs of Aztec/Incan/Mayan themed stone golems, which then led me to this guy. Hmm...?

An interesting idol that will no doubt look good on the table but I must admit I like the spiders. Maybe a slightly larger print, additional squigs on the base or different color scheme?

That Golem is amazing. A great idea that gives you incredible sources to plan your color scheme...!

I plan to paint the golem's face and the three faces hanging from its chin green, to emulate the goblins.

Also, I want to add a number of red spiders climbing all over it to match the red spider theme found elsewhere in the warband.

I'd probably get rid of the staff and reposition the arm down a bit.

Of course, I would mount it on a forest base matching the rest of the warband, and maybe include a goblin attendant or two scampering around its feet.

I'm slightly ahead of schedule on finishing this warband and, since the USPS is jammed up with holiday packages, I've received a short extension to my Jan 1 deadline. This gives me a couple of extra weeks to add another Lieutenant (Hero) to this warband.

This fella is in charge of warband's stable of giant spiders. As such, he is equipped with a prodder and appears to have an innate rapport with arachnids.
