1/56th M1A1 Abrams
« on: July 12, 2009, 03:29:05 PM »
Painted 4 more of the Hobbymaster Abrams today, to give me a platoon of 5, for my zombiehunter battlegroup - these guys are loaded for bear, and expecting trouble - probably just as well, as i've still got a lot more zombies to paint up..... lol

Humvees are a mix of TAG and Fenris, the fuel truck is a converted FOA truck, and the Strykers are from Company B (still more to do).

That’s also what I was wondering… Do zombies have any chance against M1A1 Tanks?  lol

Real nice models BTW  :-*

Do zombies have any chance against M1A1 Tanks?

If you assume that the tanks will trundle forward and squash everything in their path, then no.  ;)

If you haven't read World War Z, by Max Brooks, its well worth a look.  Tanks are armed with sabot rounds, with maybe literally a few flechette shots.  There is no contest between a tank and a handful of zombies, but don't forget I intend to field a LOT of zombies, including the horde bases.

Against a truly massive horde, they can try to run the zeds over, but run the risk of getting stuck, in a big slushy puddle of squashed zombies - no problem, just wait them out?  Well the zeds won't be going anywhere in a hurry.  How about the 50 cal etc up top?  Well fine, but someone has to pop their head out of the hatch....and some of the zombies in my games will be able to get onto the tank.

Oh, and there is always the possibility that the undead might have some "tanks" of their own..... lol

I'm hoping that the tanks will give the "survivor" players a sense of overconfidence - in reality they take up a lot of room, on narrow streets, and in the chaos might end up running over more of their own people than the zombies - don't forget those sabot/.50 cal rounds will just keep on going, and going....

Perfectly equipped for such situations: dozer blade and remote controlled secondary weapons station, either equipped with a grenade machine weapon or a machine gun. No need to leave the cosy tank  :D
So, bring them on!  >:D

These are the latest shots -will take some more piccies during the week - have added 3 new boards in, to give me a 4' x 12' table, but haven't done the street markings yet.

 ;)

First up a shot down the main street - you can see where i added the new boards in (more photos of these when they get finished in the next week).

Next 3 photos are from left to right, lengthwise along the board, starting downtown, offices/warehouse & hospital, then surburbs, then the Mall, a petrol station etc etc...

Great tanks and support Akula. That looks like a really fun table to play on. I see where the tanks could be a big help, or a really big problem. What rules are you using to handle the armor in your games?

Actually the M1A2 would be equipped with AP, HEAT and HE rounds for it's main gun.  So it could blast the zeds with 120mm HE and HEAT rounds.  The M2 can be fired from within the commanders station so no need to pop your head up and don't forget there is a co-aux 7.62 mg so the gunner can blast away with that.

The Abrams could smash through  a horde of the living dead going 50 mph and cut through a horde like a knife through butter.

If you want an armored vehicle that is limited against the horde then your Strykers would fit that bill.  Heavy armor but lightly armed.

Enjoy the chaos,
Brian

Show me where it says that in the user manual, and i'll let you do it.... ;)

I guess it depends how big the horde is, whether the driver keeps his nerve, and whether he hits any obstructions that were obscured by the mass of undead....  Also, I tend to assume that units rarely have a full load of munitions & fuel, having been in combat prior to entering the table, without resupply.

Rules wise, i'll keep it simple, there will be an element of "what could possibly go wrong" to avoid players performing textbook manoevures - personally i find that the more the player relies upon the technology, rather than tactics, the quicker they come unstuck, but that might be because I'm a sadist at heart  lol

Hey Thorbjørn,
The Kitech and Zhengdefu kits are always on eBay for the 1/48 scale. And usually for a darn decent price to boot.

I am also curious. For 28mm scale, your looking for 1/48 or 1/43 scale? Not liking the 1/56th scale or is there another reason? I ask, i personally like the 1/56th scale for my 28mm scale. Just always curious of others thoughts on the topic.  :-)
