Saxon Project!
« on: January 15, 2020, 12:47:07 PM »
For a basic Sword & Spear 400 point army, I will need 230 Foot and 20 Cavalry.

I have some painted ATM possibly 20 - 40 in my Crusader army, but I have to make, paint and base!

The project is :133 Warlord Saxon foot. I have 60 Victrix Saxon foot on their way. I will mix and match the both.

Shield Decals, Shame they put 4 sheets of the same!

The Task!

I have one unit of saxon/ Rus Cavalry already, so this will make another unit and the two extra will be a General base!

And these will be some "filler" foot if required!

And so it begins.

If it isn't enjoyable, it isn't gaming!

That's quite a project! Will be following with interest. Do you have a plan on how you're going to tackle it?

Decided to start Cleaning The Ceorls first. Cut and cleaned off sprues all 64 figures and 16 Thegns, for commanders & to bulk out to 80 figures, so making four 20 man units. The units will be kit bashed with some Fire Forge, Gripping Beast too!

I will be mixing in some Victrix when they arrive.

I will be using Steel Spears and metal weapons, I think these are from GB.

Shield & Weapon Sprue. I will be using the round shields only

Ceorls Box ready for fitting together.

Received Victrix Saxons and tried a bit of kit swapping with the Warlord games Saxons. I think the Victrix are far more superior for product and poses.

1st Warband Built and ready for priming. Will add shields later. some Kit bashing involved. Still needs some "cleaning". Also did one front ranker with a steel spear to see how noticeable it will be once painted!

2nd Unit  of Ceorls now made, ready for priming.

I have cut off the weapons and drilled the hands on the Victrix figures. All standard figures, majority now with metal weapons. There is one figure missing, but it is a 20 man unit, he kept falling over and knocking figures down!

You can tell the quality of Victrix over the Warlord figures!

Great stuff Phil and a very good idea to pop some metal weapons into their hands to avoid the heartbreak of one snapping after a paint job.

Carry on sir!

Fast work there. Although in my experience, building them is a lot easier, quicker and more fun, than painting them!

Yep, must admit, if I were doing this, I wouldn’t bother with the Warlord product.
Comparing the Warlord Saxons to the Victrix Saxons, is like putting a Reliant Robin alongside a Range Rover and saying ‘well, they’re both cars...’ I’m afraid there’s a vast difference in quality - sadly all too apparent when you put the highly detailed, beautifully moulded Victrix parts onto the rudimentary, poorly detailed Warlord bodies...  :(

Problem is I have 133 Warlord figures which I won in a raffle. Would never have bought them if I had a choice!

Victrix and Gripping beast for any "fillers" or new units once this lot are done!
