Where to Begin with Age of Heroes?
« on: May 15, 2020, 12:35:12 PM »
I have been having so much fun playing a fantasy version of Age of Heroes (a free set posted at https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=123510.msg1558648#msg1558648) that I ordered a bunch of 10mm figures. I now realize I bit off quite a bit, so I need to prioritize. Help me decide which pair to do first.

Had to go with Elves vs. Orcs.

Whoever wins I look forward to seeing them painted!

I'm doing a little necromancy. I brought this project back. Sort of.

I have given up on miniatures. Instead, I'm making homemade counters to play games. I made some dwarf and goblin counters for skirmish gaming. They won't be to everyone's taste, but I'm playing solo and I like them. Furthermore, they let me create armies much quicker than with miniatures so that I can get onto the games.

Anyway, here is the first fight: https://warwithoutminis.blogspot.com/2024/10/dwarves-vs-goblins-in-arena-of-heroes.html

While I enjoy the craft side of wargaming (building models, painting, etc) and am unlikely to set aside miniatures, I  admire what you’re doing! It makes a lot of sense to me to develop rules and the game boards and markers that allow you to get a lot out of the hobby. I’ll be interested to see updates.

I realize that you went with small boards to fit with gaming on a coffee table, but it occurs to me that your rules might be able to work on bigger boards if you have more space in the future, and handle larger battles in an efficient way. Not saying you should be playing battles on a larger area, just that the approach you’re using seems like it would scale up well if you ever decided to go that direction.

TBH I've just seen your blog fir the first time and it looks like I've a bit of reading to do :-)
I've no trouble with counters (I mainly play with resin blocks) but wonder if a slight background colour wash would help differentiate the race / side?

Thanks for the kind words.

My approach could definitely scale up. I thought about doing full scale DBA using bases like these https://www.wargamevault.com/product/274242/Wargame-Armies--Ancient-and-Medieval?filters=0_40214_40001_0_0 But smaller scale is working best for me now.

I like the idea of a background wash. Too late for these; I already printed them. I'll consider it for next time.
