  • I have a bad feeling about this...
Norman Lady/Princess figure needed
« on: 15 July 2020, 10:14:36 PM »
I'm looking for an early medieval/Norman era Lady/Princess figure and my searching has come up dry. Something like Bad Squiddo's Aethelflaed set but dressed/equipped in later clothes/gear would be ideal. The mini doesn't have to be strictly historical since she will be doing double duty in fantasy games. The perfect mini would size well with Victrix Vikings and Conquest Normans. All help is appreciated. Thanks all.

Have you considered Footsore's Æthelflæd (Æthelflæd, the Lady of Mercia).

Reaper has a lot of Princess and Queen figures.  Some in bones material pretty inexpensive.

Try Antediluvian Miniatures.

Scroll down:

The lady third from the right looks just right for the 11th Century.

I've got a Lady Godiva mini that came free with a 1066 and All That Warhammer Anceint Battles Campaign Weekender run by Gripping Beast at WHW back in the day.

I'll see if I can fish it out and take a pic so as it's based on a real 11th Century member of the aristocracy so ought to give you a very good idea of what to look for.

I know she was a real person, but just about everything that gets written about her is nonsense. Which is a pity - it's a fun story.
The laws of probability do not apply to my dice in wargames or to my finesses in bridge.

The Gripping Beast model is a very down to earth, fully clothed in eleventh century garb Lady Godiva. I'll try to fish the model out as I said.

As for Æthelflæd, she was with the army but more out of utter necessity. This was far from the norm at the time as I'm sure we all know. Happily times have progressed since the 11th C.

The Godiva model is available from Northstar these days.
It was originally a Wargames Illustrated promo figure and comes with a fantasy Coplestone nude version.

If you can source one the Crisis show miniature a few years ago was William the Conqueror's wife Mathilda.
An accurately dressed Norman noblewoman.
The model is quite small as Mathilda was legendarily petite (although this seems to be a myth springing from a misreading of her bone measurements - modern interpretation suggests she was normally sized for the times).

Some pics here:

Mirliton do some 13th century ladies that can be converted backwards if you wish (I have done so for my Norman Lady and her Lady in Waiting).

I'll see if I can post a picture of the conversions today.

Thanks for the Mirliton suggestion! Do you know how well they scale up with other ranges?

I keep hoping someone will do a Sikelgaita figure.

I still have some basing work to do on the Lady in Waiting, but here is a scale comparison shot of my conversions

Foundry Viking, Mirliton Lady, Perry Norman/First Crusade, Mirliton Lady, Footsore Monk

Closer shot of the ladies

Overall I find they scale pretty well.  A little thinner/slighter, but they don't look out of place.

In the Blue Moon Robin Hood set, there’s a very nice Lady Marian holding a dagger. I’ve got her primed. Must get on and paint her one day. She came in a batch of unwanted figures that the Prof very kindly sent me a few years back. Goodness knows why he gave her away, because she’s great :)
