Italian Wars 15mm HRE

Hi! I'm making a DBA army, Maximillian German, centered on the Italian Wars, more or less the league of Cambrai/holy league period.

To start, some knights, by Khurasan. They were released this year and I had some Old Glory ones, but the ones from Khurasan are so so much better.



The blue/white knight has heraldry from Leiningen, while the black and white has heraldry from Verdun. The central knight is from the Prince-Bishopric of Brixen and I combined the heraldry of said territory (the lamb of God holding a St George flag) with a contemporary painting of Albretch Altdorfer, which painted the Resurrection of Christ. The dusk in the painting was a good match for the red of the background of the heraldry, and christ is holding the same flag. The fact that the painting has a very central composition with the halo made it a good match and looks good on the battlefield.



Such flags are not really historical, neither is the barding, although such intricate designs appear in period paintings. A more historical design would usually be just heraldry and damask patterns, however I really mixing these more colorful designs. I think they make the figures pop more.

Here it is with some Landsknechts in a warwagon (in this case, the figures are mostly Museum, with the flag bearer from Old Glory).

I have those Museum figures and recently got a few Khurasan knights - you're right, they are excellent figures.

2 mm is a 'small' scale.  15 mm is a significant gaming scale.  And, yes, I have painted some 2 mm figures - and some 25 mm figures ages ago before scale creep became its own hobby pandemic.  Did I say 15 mm is a Significant Gaming Scale!     End result - 15 mm forever, or 40 mm if my eyesight gets bad enough.

And, yes, very nice work on those figures.

15mm is indeed a significant gaming scale in terms of popularity. I have several 15mm armies. I think most people would accept however, that 15mm is a small scale in terms of the size of the figures (along with 12mm, 10mm, and 6mm. AFAIK 2mm are just blocks, so not really scale figures at all).
We all know your devotion to 15mm. It doesn’t mean you need to make an argument out of it every time someone mentions that scale - thereby detracting and distracting from the thread in question. It would be nice for people to be able to enjoy / focus on this new contributor’s spectacular painting, rather than your tedious obsession with tilting at imagined slights against your preferred scale.

Just freehand. I usually prime in black (something I should change eventually), then add like 4-5 base coats mof white (because it has terrible coverage), then add some light brown as background - basically imitating gesso. Then with a somewhat diluted red I do more or less the structure (in the case of the lamb, a few circles for the lamb, a straight line for the ground and some for the cave). When applying the light colors of the sky, the outline is still visible (it's not 100% convered), so you can lay out paint on top.
