Perry Afghan Tribesmen Tests- Second Anglo Afghan War

I managed to finish off the varnishing on these 'test' miniatures this weekend so I thought I'd pop up a few pics.

They were not quite 'speed painted' but more 'medium paced'; think Paul Collingwood as opposed to Jofra Archer and you're close to the mark.

Rather good, Darrell.  Very interested to see how the plastics measure up and fit in with both the Perry metal and earlier Foundry ranges, all of which were beautifully done by Michael P of course. I still think his (20 year old?) Afghan tribesmen for Foundry are some of the best wargames figures ever made, in terms of perfectly capturing the flavour of the subject. He has a real feeling for this setting, without doubt. I can’t wait to put a few plastic Pathans together when my box arrives, and set them up alongside figures I have from the two aforementioned metal ranges to see how they look.

They do. They actually painted up well, the main trouble I had was getting rid of the flash.... still, worth it

Yeah, I've got a couple of Foundry Afghans that I'll be chucking in among this little lot. They look good with the next batch as they are primed but the proof of the pudding will in the painting which I find often helps to blend in different ranges as long as there's not a huge difference in height and bulk etc.

You're certainly right about the Foundry Afghans. They are superb sculpts and have stood the test of time equally as well as Foundry's Copplestone sculpts. The only thing that bothers me about the foundry range is the manner in which their packs have been put together.

Does one really need two identical artillerymen in one pack?


I sold a few packs that i had owned for a few years last year and I'm living with a just a smidgen of regret on that front at present.

Just three(!)  The 11th CE Spanish thing is on the back burner for now until I can get it booked for a show which was the original intent for that project.

Atheling - I really like those, the miniatures and the pose, but your clean painting is lovely and very believable tones and colour range. My father in law went to Afghanistan for the UN and was looked after by the ‘poppy farmers’. He said they were the most welcoming and warm people he had met (and he’s Kurdish who are all about family and being welcoming - my wedding involved being hugged and squeezed by lots of my wife’s Kurdish family members and being told I was too skinny  ).

I was going to ask what you had in mind for them but having read your blog I’ll be patient and await your announcement

When I got back into painting (I think last November) I promised myself that I wasn't going to go mad and lap up everything that I took a liking to. I'd like to think that "I've passed the test" but the evidence isn't all in as I have only made it to one show this year and when I do, that will be the moment of truth  I consistently make a beeline for Dave Thomas' stall at every show

Marine, these aren't the plastics they are the metals from their existing range. The plastics will probably be better!

That sounds lovely. I've heard similar stories from a veteran I know about the hospitality of the Afghans in general. Seems like the poorer the family the more generous. There's a message in there that we could all take to heart really.

Ah, if I told you I would have to kill you and that certainly would not be very welcoming  . I'll let you know when I can. The thing is settled but I've got a lot of painting to do before I can make any definitive announcement. It's nothing earth shattering

You're not alone in that. I just got an order from one of the mdf companies that was wrong, looked again at what I had ordered and they were 100% correct at their end. Totally me making a gaff

I'm gagging at the bit waiting for them to be delivered  I reckon they will be better then the metals and certainly more versatile for conversion work/kit bashing.

Talking of conversions- from an Indian mutiny Casualty (quite a bit of work to be completed on him yet):
