Impetus Spartan army
« on: September 04, 2020, 03:13:22 PM »
Hi all, i'd like to share with you my spartan army based for Impetus. I single base the models using magnetized  movement trays. It's not the most elegant way to base figures but in this way you can use the same figures for many ruleset.
Ages ago i bought a complete spartan army from wargames foundry. Imho they are still among the best ancients figure around, full of character. I used 3 main colours, black, red and white, plus bronze of course.  Chitons and vests were painted crimson as testified by the few historical sources on the spartan army. Most of the shields portray the lambda letter, while on others I painted free hand (please forgive me)  some motifs linked to Sparta, most gorgons and rays.  For the commander I built a vignette of a general (Sparta's king?) making a sacrifice after having erected the trophy. I was inspired by a cover from a past issue of WSS. You can note that one of the shield on the trophy portray the teban symbol (heracles club) since a friend of mine is painting a teban army and i forecast many wins on them!

They look excellent  :-* You have done a cracking job on those.

Great to see army pictures rather just a unit. I agree with you Foundry World of the Greek is IMHO still the best hoplite range around.

I am slowly doing up my Foundry Athenian force. Thinking of using a version of Lion Rampant as they are easy to pick up. Impetus may be a possibility though for me as well.

Good evening. Nice looking army.  I too have a Foundry Spartan army to paint as an opponent to my Athenians and Thracians.  Interesting comment about moving from Lion Rampant to Impetus. I tried Impetus but never got on with them. I then caught the "To the Strongest" bug and have never looked back .Highly recommended .

Thanks for the kind words. The army is planned to play basic impetus 2, the simple version of impetus: most time I play at the club Is Friday night and I like to have a ruleset that let you finish a game in two hours. Given the  flexible basing system I'd like to use the army to play Infamy Infamy once the ancient greek army lists Will be available. Lion rampant Is also a fine option to give try.
