Re: UVS Oathmark - Human Light Infantry 15/01/2023

In my quest for variation in the assorted armies I am building, I bought a box of Gripping Beast Dark Age Welsh from Orc's Nest last year.

The box contains five identical sprues, each of which builds five light infantry. The main weapon is a spear (and shield), though there are optional axes, a sword and a two handed spear. They have wooden backed round shields with a centre grip.

As you can see, they scale nicely with the North Star Oathmark Human Infantry.

The plan is to use them as Human Militia, though they are obviously armed with spears, they will count as Hand Weapons due to lack of training (no Brace).

There are sprue photographs here: https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/2023/01/gripping-beast-dark-age-welsh.html.

Having checked the sprue photographs of the Irish and Picts, most of them are the same. There are different capes, some heads and additional shields in the latter two.

So inspired by someone else on here (I apologise that I cannot remember your name), when I saw the Gripping Beast Goth Elite Cavalry on special offer  on the Renedra stand at Salute 2023 I picked them up.

I added the helmeted heads from the Oathmark Elf light infantry to convert them to Elves The Oathmark heads have a ball joint, the Goth Cavalry figures a flat surface,so a pilot hole was drilled into the neck part of the body, and that was opened up with larger diameter drills until a 3mm drill made the correct size for the head.

The horse had a feather from the Light Infantry sprue added to the head with the feather projecting back between the ears. I did contemplate making them unicorns, but they were not bulky enough.

There are sprue pictures here: https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/2023/04/elvewn-heavy-cavalry-gripping-beast.html

Apology accepted :)! I hope that you will paint them faster than I, because mine are kind of... still grey... But I would like to see, how they look painted :).

Lovely work all round, your armies are shaping up nicely. I'd never be brave enough to have so many projects on the go.

Barrow or Ghoul Worms are enormous burrowing creatures that having consumed dead flesh have become undead themselves.

Necromancers can control (with difficulty) the creatures, unleashing them on their enemies.

Having wanted to add some heavy hitters to my undead army, I was looking for something suitable.
Crooked Dice have a Death Worm which I thought would be suitable. This is a one piece resin model.

I have gone for a dry and dusty version, not sure if a icky wet version would look better.

A horrifying worm! Very suitable model for the unit description. Reminds me of the Carnictis that appeared in the most horrifying of the deleted scenes from Peter Jackson's King Kong film.

It looks good, but I wonder if the icky wet version might look better as well.

Thanks.

I might leave it as is and try another approach when I pick up a second one.

Thank you for reminding me, I remember seeing that scene when I saw it at the cinema.

The first expansion book for Oathmark included rules for boats.
There are two sizes, one that takes one 20 figure unit, the other two 20 figure units.
Blotz has released an MDF kit for a river barge.

As you can see it will take a Renedra 5x4 sabot base (but sideways).

The hull suffers from the problem with MDF models where there are curves (yes the water will get in).

I still need to sort the sails and mast.

Looks like a great kit, thanks for sharing!

Agree on the gaps, might be worth filling with some filler.

So, it has been a while.
The revenant infantry was released at the end of June 2021. I assembled five in August. They were undercoated before February 2023.

Now they are painted.

The weapons and armour painting was inspired by the World of Stonehenge exhibition https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/2022/07/bronze-age-arms-and-armour-from-world.html

Now just got to assemble and paint the rest of the Army.
Plus some chariots.

Nice result.  The Revenants were one of the "misses" for me with Oathmark.  Not a huge fan of the kit, but you've made them serviceable!  lol
