Godemar I du Fay heraldry?
« on: 14 September 2020, 11:12:09 AM »
Hi,

I'm seeking the heraldic arms for Godemar I du Fay (d. 1350). He was the gallant chap who was given charge of defending the ford at Blanchetaque where the English army of Edward III (lead by Hugh, Baron Despenser and  William, Earl of Northampton) crossed prior to Cracy 1346.

Thanks :)

How old was he when he died?  If he's in the army in 1346 and died in 1450 he must have truly been long-lived.....

If I had to guess it would be the late 14th CE but I have no evidence other then a memory of reading this somewhere...... I could be miles out.

Well something is wrong with those dates. If he was of fighting age in 1346 there is no way he died in 1450. He would have been more than a hundred years old.

Typo- whoops  :D

So, 1350. He escaped the route at Blanchetaque but was seriously wounded.

does anyone have any ideas re: Godemar I du Fay coat of arms?

Oh interesting! So, similar to the old-style Valois arms?

Do you know what source your friend used to find the arms? I ended up on a bit of a wild goose chase for what ended up being de Fay arms! (Via a Marguerite de Fay and her husband from the Bouton family)

Her arms look a bit more "Hauteville but with more trimmings" so I was probably way off!

Yep, it was from Heraldic Sketchbook by Peter Greenhill. I've got his Miniature Knights publication but not the former tome.

Cheers Matt, can you check it against the heraldry below please? It's from Heraldic Sketchbook, Peter Greenhill who did a lot of research into the HYW and heraldry, at a time when it was only really academics looking at the subject.

I looked at this thread purely because of the name! I think I might change mine to it. What a guy, what a discussion, and what a great coat of arms.

Huh! Is that three Godemar du Fays specifically, or three different du Fay families? I'd definitely be curious to see the other two too, if there's any common geography or family between them!
