I just painted up a Native American using dark flesh followed by a GW devlan wash followed by a very light tanned flesh hilight...looks very realisitc.

Do you want a realistic look or something according to the 'red man' cliché?
For the first just paint them like average Europeans (not as light as Caucasian skin). Most Woodland Natives only seem to be 'darkened' by being outdoor most of the time. There's nothing 'red' about their skin colour, 'bronzed' at best.
For improved differentiation on the tabletop maybe use a pale brown. I've also had my issues, but after looking at hundreds of photos I ended up with Foundry's "Dusky Flesh" (here's an example: LINK). Perhaps one could build this up on a reddish base colour like "Chestnut".

Well in comparing Grimm`s nicely painted figure, I have to admit, mine is approximately the exact same colouration, so I must be doing something right...

Must admit I'm with Mad Doc on this. I tend to paint mine with the exact same flesh mix I use for Europeans, although perhaps a slightly duskier mix of it.
I'm not a great fan of the extreme coppery red skin portrayed by Griffring - spectacular as this looks in his wonderful paintings.
I also tend to cover mine in so much warpaint, that there's not that much natural flesh actually on show anyway

Eric Roof shared his recipe with me a few years ago. He uses a base of GW Beast Brown (or it's VGC equivalent) followed by a 2:1 mix of the beast brown and dwarf flech (I now use VMC red beige instead of the Dwarf Flesh). Then a 1:1 mix of the same followed by 1:1:1 the same plus ivory just for final highlights. Since discovering VMC orange brown I have played with a formula similar to Grimm's that gives very similar results to Eric's.

I wouldn't say I am an expert on natives at all, but the dusky color Griffing uses is a pretty close match for most of the ones I have met at re-enacting events. Of course it can be hard to find a NA who is even close to full-blooded in the East any more.

Many tribes (such as Seminole) had contingents of escaped slaves that were made members of the tribe (enemies of my enemies thing.)
