Tears of the Sun (The Director's Cut)

On Saturday 18th November, Hollywood comes to ShedHQ again, with the visit of my friend David Hunter, who will be taking on the star role of Lt A.K. Waters from the movie Tears of the Sun. Can the brave and charismatic US Ranger and his team evacuate the beautiful Dr Kendricks & the villagers to safety?

Mission - Turmoil erupts in Nigeria following a military coup led by exiled General Mustafa Yakubu in which President Samuel Azuka and his entire family are reportedly assassinated. The ethnic enmity is between the Fulani Muslims in the north and Christian Igbo in the south.

Foreigners evacuate the country and Lieutenant A.K. Waters and his U.S. Rangers are dispatched to extract Dr. Lena Fiore Kendricks, a U.S. citizen by marriage to the late Dr. John Kendricks who was killed by rebels in Sierra Leone.

Their secondary mission is to extract the mission's priest and two nuns, should they choose to come.

Tears of the Sun: Battle Report

After a successful Halo-jump into Nigeria, Lt Waters fails to obtain Dr Kendricks compliance to the evacuation unless the villagers are also taken to safety. Meanwhile, the Rangers setup a defensive perimeter around hospital and mission buildings.

Despite being slowed by the civilians, the US Rangers make good progress through the dense jungle canopy. The fire teams working in perfect unison to cover each whilst on the move. Behind them shots can be heard, as only about 50% of the village inhabitants were able to travel.

On entering the village, Commander Terwase and his Bodyguard began to question the inhabitants. He quickly realizes the Rangers have a head start on the rebels and he sends out flanking patrols in an attempt to block the evacuation.

It wasn’t long before the rebels began to catch-up with the slower moving Rangers. Firefights subsequently began to erupt as the rebels advance on extended line through the dense jungle. Ordering two of the teams forward, the rest of the Rangers attempted to hold back the enemy.

The highly trained Americans were certainly racking up a high kill ratio against the Nigerians, ensuring that every attack was successful repulsed. The Rangers on point, radioed back to Lt. Waters, they had located a suitable river crossing south towards the Cameroon border.

To aid the river crossing, Lt Waters ordered his light mortar team to lay down several smoke rounds. This was effective in disorientating the Nigerians and again helped to blunt their attacks.

As the first group of Rangers and civilians broke the jungle canopy and began to cross the bridge, a US SuperCobra was given permission to enter Cameroon airspace. Lt Waters immediately called in an airstrike around his deteriorating defensive position to aid the evacuation.

With the SuperCobra now in support, the Nigerians quickly began to withdraw and Lt Waters ordered his men to the collapse the defensive perimeter. US victory with all accompanying civilians saved - Yippee Ki-Yay!!!
