Perry Dragoons as Line lancers?
« on: October 31, 2020, 10:44:16 PM »
if you have a bunch of extra carabinier heads left over from 3 or so heavy cavalry boxes, do you think you could use them to turn  Perry Plastic dragoons into line French lancers?  It looks like other then helmets,  it looks like the uniforms and shabraques are the same.  it seems like the only significant conversion aspect would be removing the sword hilts from the hands.

Warlord have plastic Line Lancers.

Well I have carefully considered this project and in my opinion you are much better off using the Perry Chasseurs-a-Cheval plastic figs as a starting point, as it will make a conversion into French Chevau-Leger-Lanciers a lot easier and more realistic.

I am in fact doing this very same project and plan to recreate all six (6) Chevau-Leger-Lanciers regiments (12 fig units)....although work is going really slowly due to other activities called 'life' and the fact that I am really engrossed in learning how best to use my 3D Resin printer  ;D.

Below are a couple of photos that might give you some ideas:

Warlord have plastic Line Lancers.

i would buy the warlord ones if there isn't a simple conversion answer.  the reasons being :

1) the warlord ones have some details wrong.. like the coats over the wrong shoulder.

2) the price.  they are more expensive per figure then a Perry box of cavalry.

3) numbers in a box.  for a Perry box of chasseurs a cheval, if I order a single command sprue i can do 2 units(16 figures, a whole regiment).  For warlord, despite being more expensive per box, I can only get 3 units of of 2 boxes. In fact when I did the math,  a Perry box WITH an extra command sprue costs slightly less then a single box of warlord lancers.

so if i have the extra heads kicking around its totally worth having to drill out a few hands.

Thanks for the heads up!  I had not considered that particular box, if only because i don't yet have any in my possession to scrutinize.

The Perry's Chasseur-a-Cheval box has the correct uniform and just requires a new head (helmet), sword, bayonet scabbard, new lance arm, and of course the lance.

You mean something like this?

It is something I tried back in 2010, but never completed. To be honest I do not remember which components I used, and more suitable sets have come out since then, as indicated by other replies.

I do remember that various sets were required, and that it is probably why it got put in a box and left - just not economical.

You can buy sprues of light cavalry horses.

Why not just dragoon helmets and lances? I might miss some nuances of the uniforms or shortcomings of the chasseurs set here, but I always thought that conversion would be pretty straightforward.

"Line lancers" had crested helmets...
A CANADIAN local hobby store with a small selection of historical wargames miniatures (mainly from Warlords). They also have a great selection of paint and hobby accessories from Vallejo, Army painter, AK Interactive, Green Stuff World and more.; https://tistaminis.com/

Ah, of course. But the carabinier helmets from the heavy cavalry would work, wouldn’t they?

I just don’t understand why the Perrys haven’t made a conversion pack yet.

Conceivably because Perry Mins have had excellent metal line lancers miniatures in their catalogue for about ten or fifteen years now. Their metal packs stand a very good chance of being as good as - and probably better than - most plastic conversions out there and will most likely be a cheaper option as well since multiple boxes will be required to provide all the components.

And while I'm at it, carabinier helmets are also wrong for chevau-léger lanciers as the shape was not quite the same :

....well...NO...but it does depend on what you are trying to achieve, your skill level, etc. Moreover, I like putting things together, and plastic/resin is much easier for me to work with than metal. Plus, you can create a lot more variety with customizing your own units.

For any of you interested in picking up some of the Perry Line Lancers, my wife has mine on her eBay:

Ooh tempting but not enough of a bargain for a mid month splurge, sure they will get snapped up though.
