Fantasy terrain that's actually fantastical
« on: 03 November 2020, 02:04:34 AM »
Locally we've wandered into some fantasy-flavoured skirmish gaming, and naturally I needed to build some specific scenery for this, because that's how I'm wired up.

I decided to do some fantasy terrain that actually looked, well, like fantasy terrain. If you want to fight in a normal pine forest, go play WW2 Ardennes or Romans vs Germanic tribes or whatever. I wanted fantasy terrain that made it incredibly obvious this was a fantasy game, weird fun stuff clearly not of this planet!

To that end I bought into a Kickstarter than ended back in September and went looking for companies that made really fantastic weird terrain features.

The first stuff ready to show off is the three fungus thickets in the photo above. CD bases, and the mushrooms are a mix of 3d printed stuff from the Fantastic Rocks & Trees KS and mushrooms from Dark Fantastic Mills out of the UK, who do fantastic stuff. (more on them in a later post!)

Yep, that does not look much like the Battle of the Bulge!

Lovely colourful mushrooms - makes me want to get my milliput out and try and make some myself!

That looks great.

Plus you've reminded me that I was doing  similar thing last year; must dig out what I've got and follow your post for further ideas.

I like where your head is at. Alien worlds should look alien, and fantasy worlds should be fantastic!

Really fun stuff. Can't wait to see more.

Glad people are enjoying the mushroom thickets, they were fun to put together and I'm very pleased with how they came out!

Slowly finishing up some more terrain, most of which I started earlier this year. Earlier this century? I can't tell anymore, 2020 has been tens of thousands of years long...

Finally put the finishing touches on this strange fantasy gate/portal thing I started back in June. It sat around as bare pink styrofoam for far too long, then as a painted piece that still needed flock and landscaping to really fit in, and now it's done finally!

As for all the stuff in the background, I'll have another post about that in the next couple of days after I do some photo editing.

A bit more over on the blog, as usual: http://www.warbard.ca/2020/11/09/more-weird-fantasy-terrain/

The terrain is FANTASTIC indeed. It is also highly imaginative, beautifully crafted & painted. VERY WELL DONE!

Thank you, that means a lot coming from the original Mad Mushroom Man!

I finally got half decent photos of my giant mushrooms from Dark Fantastic Mills and put up photos and a review of them on my blog.

They're great clean 3d prints, unique designs, and HUGE. Like, the smallest of the "big" shrooms is still about 4" tall.

Painted up a big 120mm across resin base from nearly-local Rain City Hobbies. This will eventually become part of a slightly larger ruined temple base, but mostly it was an excuse to try different painting techniques out, experiment with making stone look cool in various ways, and as a distraction from the Current F***ing Situation.

I really like how this ended up, with the various types of stone and such, especially the white statue fragments, which are done using paints thinned way down with glaze medium and lots and lots of layers for a lovely translucent polished stone effect.

How did you paint the green stone?

How did you paint the green stone?

The green was a fairly dark green basecoat, then several layers of brighter/lighter greens mixed fairly liberally with glaze medium, and mostly applied in patches and "veins" for the sort of marbled look.

Then it got a single coat of acrylic gloss varnish, and finally a bit of highlighting with an off-white paint.

I forgot to write down which exact paints I was using at every step, so if I ever want to recreate this exact look it'll take some experimenting. The basic idea works well and was easy to do, though.
