Hi Everyone:

In between projects at Hydra Miniatures I've been collecting and painting old school fantasy figures with the intention of using them for some sort of mass combat game.  I've created a blog to document my project on my new blog Ye Olde School Miniatures at http://yeoldeschoolminiatures.wordpress.com/

My first post shows painted figures are old Ral Partha goblin archers sculpted by Tom Meier in 1979.  Here they are:

I'll be posting more new painted figures in a few days. Enjoy!

Awesome! I used to have a bunch of those along with some orcs, trolls, and a war machine.

Man I am so sad I sold them. :(

Those are great! I much prefer them to those abominations sold by The Evil Empire  ;)

you've done a lovely job on the skin tones and the sculpts wouldn't be disgraced next to modern stuff.

More pics, please  :D

They are still comparable to most in today's market I reckon.

Those goblins (along with the Ral Partha orcs) are still my favourite sculpts for fantasy.  Looking forward to seeing the rest!

Your painting is wonderful!  :o

Its so nice to see some classic and usually forgotten oldies being given time by a talented artist. They were superb sculpts which portrayed a realistic fantasy creature and your painting has really done them justice.

Seeing them has made my day!

Thanks

me too... I love those vintage d&d minis. I have nearly all of the Grenadier AD&D box sets. Lots of rare minifigs too :)

d&d goblins should be orange though  ;)

Didn't Tom work for said Evil Empire in years gone by? Well, maybe there weren't evil at that time...  ;)

As they've evolved they have constantly "improved"  ??? their figures. I used to quite like their fantasy stuff, now I dislike most of the range. Maybe it was Tom's stuff I used to like years ago?  ;)

Tom did indeed work for them but only for a short spell, 83-84 I think. They had a close relationship with Ral Partha in those days and so Ral minis used to appear in the citadel ranges. Generally it was bigger stuff like the dragons, though he did do a specific range of elves, and a boxed set of troglodytes and Lizardmen.

Absolutely stunning work on those Gobbos, Matt. I wish fantasy sculpts still had that kind of character.

Hi Guys:

I uploaded a painted example of a Ral Partha True Troll onto my Ye Olde School Miniatures blog http://yeoldeschoolminiatures.wordpress.com/2009/08/27/truly-awesome-true-troll/

If anyone is interested, the blog posting also lists the colors I used for the troll skin.
