15mm FoW [pics]
« on: 26 August 2009, 07:35:55 PM »
Starting my soviet force (finally) and this is a new scale for me. What sorts of suggestions can people make for making the bases seem a bit more dynamic? The base is a lot more in comparison to the model than 25 or 28mm...

Comments?

Very nice! I think your bases are fine, I'm not a fan of adding terrian etc, I prefer them plain. The addition of the shrub in the last picture was certianly a good idea, however. It works well with the spotter team.
What type of company have you gone with?

Nice work. Depends on what you want from your bases. Simplistic terrain and the focus is on the miniatures or are you wishing to enhance the whole base with miniatures by telling a story.

The Battlefront website offers many a fan with their 'Show and Tell' and generally you can get ideas from there or from the LAF as well.

Offering additional battlefield debris adds further attraction to the base as well.

Not entirely sure yet. I'm going to paint up a bunch of models I like and then create a list around that. Something infantry and cossack heavy, with some backing artillery and some t-34s. Any recommendations?

Thanks Helen!

I want these to look "thematic" for lack of a better term, but I'm not sure I want to put so much time into them that they are mini-dioramas, although I'm not opposed to doing some Kommissar stands and maybe some snipers in that manner.

Right now, the base just seems to overshadow the models, because the models are so small... Maybe I just need to get used to the scale.

I assume you're using the Ostfront book?
I find the best way to start is to build a really basic infantry/mechanised/tank company, then expand from there. I think the Strelkovy Bttn gives you the most options if you're starting with Soviets, but it all really depends on how many tiny infantrymen you can paint before going mad!  lol

But then again, I myself play a Romanian infantry company, and so am obviously not really the one to ask if you want any sound advice on the matter (very nearly the worst list in the game! woo!).

Either Ostfront or Stalin's Onslaught... I don't know if I want an elite force (would mean much less painting!) or wave after wave of conscripts...

I have just about almost 2 battalions of infantry just about done to the standard seen in the pictures. I want to spend a little more time on them getting them a little nicer before moving into any other projects. Definitely want some Katyushas too... But I need to work on one thing at a time (or in my case, 20 things at a time).

As someone else who is building an Ostfront based Soviet force I know how you feel. I have a lot of infantry bases still to build...

For my basing I simply built the bases up using household filler and then painted it using two or three shades of cheap craft paint. Finally I glued on some Silfor 6mm autumn grass tufts.

Here's the Katyusha I did a while ago, I still need to photo the latest items

Hello!

Very good work. In my opinion, they base need "earth" (more roughness). In addition, grass tufts (like this: http://www.internationalmodels.net/acatalog/Original_Grast_Tufts__Long.html) give life to the bases!.

Very nice. I like the level of highlighting that you put into the Katyusha. I will probably do a second round once I get everything done to a decent tabletop standard, but at the rate I paint, I need to hurry things along a little bit. Why did I think that painting a heavily infantry-based army would be easy for me?

I'm quite a slow painter generally, unless I'm gearing up for a tournament.

I was thinking along the lines of that actually. I tried adding some more foliage and I think it improves the look of the base, even if it's not as "realistic" as having it more wide open.

Here's some pictures of stuff I just updated, you can actually see the wet paint on the scouts' base. I have about 30 stands of infantry that's about to this standard. Originally, I was thinking that the sand would not fit the models' scale, but having used them on the cossacks and now the scouts, I'm preferring it over the spackle.

No additional work on the models (yet), just the bases.

Comments? I think it's a vast improvement personally. Is anyone of the opinion that it's "too much"? I originally thought it would be, but once I actually got it done, I really think it looks superior to what it was like before.

Looks like you've added just enough to make them look great :)

Top marks, therepoman!

Hi

The extra detail looks good and it helps them. The only suggestion I would have is to lighten the base colour a bit. I find smaller scale figures look better on lighter bases especially if their clothing is dark.

3" sabol trays. I have enough of them that it makes sense. I will be updating my initial post with the rest of the company sometime in the next few days. Have a 900 points (don't laugh!) tournament coming up that I have to prepare for. My list is just about all infantry. Maybe I'll cheat and put a Tankovy Company in there.
