Scratch built ACW naval. Updated now 13 models.
« on: 17 January 2021, 01:50:48 AM »
All,
I have always found scratch building small scale vessels to be a pleasant and relaxing change from painting minis.  I do find myself with a dilemma however.  See, I had built around two dozen ironclads etc. in something like 1/1000th scale.  I am using though, 10mm figures for land actions. I decided it would be neat to have a couple models in scale to the figures.  Well, as these things tend to, this side project has grown all out of hand.  First, I’m finding making 1/200th models great fun, and they do look good on the table. But, they really are too big for reasonable games with the rules I use.  The link below actually shows photos of both scales.  The first five photos are the new, larger ones.  I’d love to hear opinions.
I’ve really gotten into this project, looks like I will stick with it.  I’ve now finished thirteen models as seen here

I think they are lovely. Could you use them as a stranded objective? even if it is a "what if"
scenario I think it would be cool

Nick, very nice.  I try to game ACW naval in 1/300 but am struggling to find a set of rules that I like. What do you use?

The larger ships look great and being in scale with miniatures a lot of land/sea operations could be played out where small actions could have major consequences on the outcome of a major battle.

SJWi,
I’m actually playing around with three sets, Dahlgren and Columbiad, Blood, sweat and iron, and The Gridded Naval Wargame.  All three are pretty good and reasonably simple.  The gridded game is of course different, requiring a hexed playing area.  They all provide rules to combine land and sea actions as well.

Thanks. Is the book on gridded gaming by Bob Cordery? If so a mate of mine has bought a  copy and I will speak to him.

Yep, it is the book by Bob Cordery.  I am a fan of his rules.  Of course, they are not written for such large models.  I will have to make up a much bigger grid.
