Oathmark Basing Question

Hello All,

A quick basing question around basing for Oathmark.  All my basing is circular and my cav is larger than my infantry.  Everything I have read in the rules , or seen in battle reports, seems to indicate the actual unit width is not that impactful. 

I have not played yet and I only have the rule books.  I wanted to ask others who have more direct experience.  Does the total unit width matter?

I have all my infantry based on circles and had no problems.

My cavalry are based on rectangles, so I didn’t face the issue you have (are they 40mm circles, or are they 50mm?) The extra width might put the circle-based cavalry units at a disadvantage for manoeuvring (they’ll get in the way of friends more often). It also might result in them being attacked more often because they’re holding more of the army’s frontage than units on 25mm wide bases (the unit could only be attacked by one at a time, though, since each combat is fully resolved before going on to the next activation).

Could also require a bit of finesse when that unit attacks, because a unit can only charge a single enemy and a double-wide unit might cause accidental contact with two units. Accidental contacts should be easy to work around if both players are reasonable.

I wrote this to another topic:
"Base sizes are fixed in Oathmark, however, their importance is in my opinion not that high. The unit width gives the number of dices (mainly 5), but what happens, when its not 25mm, but 20mm, or 32mm? The unit will not be 125mm, but 100mm or 160mm, but it has still 5 dices. The unit width is only real important in some rare situations: can it be charged or not, is it a flank attack, or not. More wide or narrow can be good or bad, depending on the situation. But if You dont play competitively, all this can be discussed... The length is even less important: can it be flank attacked or not? But here is clear: the longer, the worse (unless You want to block something)."

But if your cavalry is on circle bases, thats much more wide, and will make difficulties, as Pattus Magnus wrote.

We play 40mm round based cavalry with 'visual' ranks of 3 miniatures.

Unit Depth have never been an issue on our games and we stated we would ignore 'fake' ranks in case it was. Note we mainly play little units of cavalry, as they are pretty expensive  so your mileage may vary
