Basing Question
« on: December 29, 2013, 05:06:02 PM »
Santa brought me 3 set of official Northstar figures. Once painted I will face the problem of basing them. Questions: What is the ideal size and shape for the bases. What is the most economical way to get them bearing in mind that I am a pensioner on limited resources. I have no qualms about plain bases and doing my own landscaping. I looked at GW but bulked at the cost for ten pieces of plain round plastic. Any advice would be gratefully received with thanks.

Dans les situations critiques, quand on parle avec un calibre bien en pogne, personne ne conteste plus. Y'a des statistiques là-dessus.

I use pennies (in Canada)
I'm sure there is a small denomination coin that would work in Scotland

I've looked at slotta bases but whilst I enjoy landscaping a base I just cant be bothered with the extra work of sealing the slots. Just laziness on my part I guess. But if I can fgind nothing else - this will be the way I'm forced to go.

You can buy the wooden bases by Warbases in the uk or you can use metal washers. If you're willing to make them yourself you can cut your own plastic card or wooden square bases. Lots of options but here are some useful links.

- EM4 20 plastic round bases for £1.02 http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/MINIAATURES_BASES.html
- Warbases 20 wooden round bases for £1.20 and lots of different options http://war-bases.co.uk/Bases/Circular-Bases

Kind regards

2p coins every time.

Me too!

I use two pence pieces for every genre, mate.

An IHMN force containing a mix of manufacturers on tuppence bits....

I doubt you will get anything cheaper than that.

Another vote for 2p coins here. I base all my fantasy stuff on them.
My IHMN stuff is on cheap slotta's I got on ebay though. 100 for £4 with free delivery. A couple of years ago now but I imagine there are similar deals on there.

Dunno why I decided to base fantasy stuff on 2p's??? Just seemed like the right thing to do at the time?  :D

Looks like it's the two pence piece. That's about 5 bawbees in old money to us Scots. A bargain at the price. I'll also give Warbases and EM a look thanks to Belgian. Now all I have to do is stock up on SuperGlue. Thanks fellows.

1p coins for IHMN - in a game where you need to get figures into every bit of cover you can, the smaller the base the better!

I would check eBay before making a final decision: just searched for 25mm round bases and 254 results popped up (on the US site). Checked the UK eBay site and got 352 results for the same search. Most are not slotta-bases. Some come pre-textured.

For example, one UK source sells 50 bases, 25mm or 20mm, 2mm or 3mm thick, laser-cut MDF, for £0.99, with £4.50 shipping. More than 2p apiece, but still rather inexpensive.

2p piece: 25.9 mm
1p piece: 20.3 mm

So using standard 25/20mm bases you might gain that slight edge over your pence-based opponent!  :D

Shouldn't do, what you gain on your base you lose on your opponents.
