Generic multi-basing question
« on: 21 January 2016, 02:06:46 AM »
I'm looking at my Hail Caesar armies who are all based on two seven-man strips per unit and considering re-basing them onto something more modular that will work with more games - I've been eyeing Dragon Rampant, which uses individually based models with the option to use multi-based figures and just keep track of hitpoints per stand.

So...

What roughly square base sizes work best for the most army type games?  I'm thinking like 1.5" or 2" bases with around four figures per base, but I would love to hear from people who have played more than I.

I've recently started doing 4 infantry figures on 40mmx40mm bases. That sticks with the popular 20mm square per figure basing, but keeps them in groups. Larger critters go one per 40mm square. Cavalry go 2 per 50x50 square, as do larger creatures that won't fit on a 40x40.

Previously I had been doing 3 figures per 20mmx60mm base, along with some single 20mmx20mm based figures.

I've gave it way too much thought and came to the conclusion that no matter what, there isn't a "best" option, and no matter how well a given basing scheme may work in one situation/rules, it will be awful in others. Pros & cons to each basing scheme depends on how you're going to use them, what rules, etc.

I saw recently someone who was basing models in units in different numbers: a single based mini, then two based, then three based and lastly four based. He said this gave a great deal of flexibility as the bases could be combined to create the correct unit size and base width for most rulesets. I can't remember who it was now or I'd share a link, but it was well thought out.

Dalaupror has his 1,2,3 basing system that really rocks. http://dalauppror.blogspot.dk/2015/11/123-basing.html

I have come to this the other way round as all my minis are singlebased and I wanted to do some unit type games as well. But thought my figures looked a bit lonely on their unit trays. So I placed some "unit fillers" on the trays as well. You can se them here. http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=43795.msg1054535#msg1054535

Dragon (and Lion) Rampant work in blocks of six, but there's nothing to stop you using sevens instead. If I were you, I'd try the game out with your figures based as they are. You could use one strip for a notionally six-man unit and two for a 12-man block. Each strip would still just have six strength points, but that makes no difference to game play. The rulebook even shows an example of an "oversized" unit with 18 figures for 12 strength points.

When using multi-based figures for Lion and Dragon Rampant, we just keep track of strength points on the roster sheet. As long as you keep track, the main thing is to recognise when the unit is at half strength. For most (12-strength-points) units, you could show that visually by removing one strip.

To be fair, one of the things about DR and I guess LR is it doesn't really matter what size the bases are or how many models are on them - just note the strength (I use a little dice) and go from there.
