Zulu war terrain mat suggestions
« on: 24 February 2021, 08:58:45 AM »
Does any one have any recommendations for at least 6x4 mats that would look good for isandhlwana and rorkes drift? For the latter I am guessing perhaps more well trodden, "earthy" ground?

Scale is for 28mm, and for something preferably made UK or EU even?
Collective wisdom eagerly sought!

Hi London,

For Isandlwana and Rorke's drift, you'd be better off with a lush mid green grass and an iron red soil.

January in Zululand/Natal 1879 was very fed with rain.

The later stages of the war would be better for a dry/earthy effect.

I'll find a pic to represent the look and post up in a bit.

Ryan.

Edit.....

First pic later months

Exodus 1:10 KJV
Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.

The soil in Zululand and Natal is often alarmingly red-ochre.
The laws of probability do not apply to my dice in wargames or to my finesses in bridge.

Wow that is red! I appreciate the prompt replies. Not heard of wargen before, the products look good.
Of course now with brexit a 50 euro mat will probably cost substantially more delivered to the UK...
I was also eyeballing geek villains mats in the uk, for something useful, as I have seen a lot of good reviews of their fleece mats.

Some pictures of the Geek Villain fleece mats on my wargames table.
They are Sicily style 6ftx4ft so I needed 3 for my 10x6 ft table.
The other picture is taken from my Rorkes Drift battle using Teddy Bear throws with some added paint. These can be found on the Perry Miniatures website describing how to make them. The three throws and paint cost £60.
The Geek Villain mats are £60 each so it’s a question of how much you want to spend. Hills can me made quite easily by placing objects beneath the GV mats as seen on picture. The photos taken show them lighter than in the flesh so to speak but they are excellent.

Here’s another picture of my Rorkes Drift re fight using the Teddy Bear fur throws. They look nice in the photos but I actually prefer the new Geek Villain mats for ease of movement and overall look on the tabletop.
