Little Odo's fantasy painting plog - Dragon
« on: March 19, 2021, 01:17:53 PM »
After a very long hiatus from the painting side of the hobby, I will try to begin logging my feeble attempts at getting paint in the right places onto my mountain of untouched lead and plastic fantasy miniatures.

First up are a bunch of repainted (well, partially touched up) second hand eBay orcs for my youngest son...

More of the story on these can be seen here...

Edit: Updated Img code for larger versions of the miniatures

After a game of Lord of the Rings SBG at the weekend with my youngest son, I was given orders to finish his orc miniatures! I completed the six already detailed above (a few minor painting touch-ups and basing) and then proceeded to paint six more.

Orc Elites...

Orc Spears...

Orc Archers...

Orcs with scimitars and shields...

The entire warband so far...

I looked into his miniatures drawers and found tha he has about another dozen or so orcs in various states of repair. I think I will try to fix these up for him over the next couple of weeks and then get them painted to match in with the above exisiting miniatures.

As an aside, I am having real trouble finding a suitable image sharing site - blogger seems to be a bit hit and miss at the moment? I will be trying my luck with Imgur(?) later, but for now the pictures will be small unless you care to take a look on my blog?

Good work on those orcs, hope your lad enjoys gaming with them.

For what it’s worth, I’ve recently started using imgur, and I must say it’s a 100% improvement over photobucket....wish I’d swopped before.

Here's another six more orc repaints...

There will be a few more repaired and repainted orcs to come in the next couple of posts and then I will get onto some newly painted miniatures from my lead and plastic mountains.

More details on my blog if anyone is interested...

Missed the start of the thread!  Welcome back to painting, hope you're enjoying it!

Thanks for sharing the Orcs, they were one of the first sets I remember painting up when I first got into the hobby in the early 2000s so that's a big nostalgia trip for me!

Thanks HC439. I am enjoying the painting so far as it does not feel like a chore at the moment. I think that is because I am currently just doing tidy-up paint jobs. When I get onto newer figures I will probably start to fret more - I seem to lose my nerve when they are newly built and ready to go.

I also managed to put some more paint onto a few I mended recently. These were all missing weapons etc., so needed a bit or repair work prior to painting. A couple of before shots...

And after...

Hopefully more to come very soon. These, and a few extra comments, can also be seen on my blog...

I managed to complete the last of the orcs today...

And, here is a quick look at the entire warband...

Again, more details on the blog...

Hopefully next week will see something a little different as I move on, temporarily, from repainting my son's eBay bought figures.

This is inspiring as I have many of the same orcs that have been stripped (they were all just painted with a thick coat of bright orange by the previous owner!)  and ready to be painted.  I've painted up 1 as a test but since I don't intend to paint them as a uniform group it was a bit of a wasted test haha.

I'll be following along!

Thanks Dark Choda. They are actually quite nice to paint. Make sure to publish yours on here.

On the subject of painting up test figures, I have now got onto trialing two schemes for my son's Elf collection...

He decided not to follow film canon and will make up his mind which paint job he prefers, but I would be interested in getting others' viewpoints on which one looks the better of the two.

Luckily he has only 19 or 20 elves in a variety of states of repair and painting, so hopefully this will be a quicker job than that for the orcs.

I have taken a bit of a diversion from Lord of the Rings miniatures with this post. I have managed to paint and base a small band of skeleton warriors by Otherworld Miniatures...

I really like these miniatures but they are a little fragile, so extra care will need to be taken when used on the tabletop.

They are almost completed (just need varnishing and the bases sorted) but I need some advice from the forum. With regards the bases, do you think the rims should be painted a uniform colour (if so, what colour) or returned to their native black (I have gone over the edges a bit with my basing materials)?

More on these on my little blog...

A few more of my son's Lord of the Rings elves painted this week...

Elves with glaives...

Elves with bows...

I have got to the bottom of the paint scheme that my son wanted; he is going to call these Lindon elves - they will hail from Forlindon and be Cirdan's troops in fuuture games we play.

Thanks Rick, much appreciated.

Here is a picture of my son's completed elf warband. You may spot that there are four figures on the end that are not painted yet. Thes eare to be painted by my son when we get him his own set of paint brushes.

The elf warband

The archers...

The warriors...

The unpainted ones...

More details are to be found on my blog if anyone is interested...

Coming next should be something a little different as I crack on with some of my own minatures. Thanks for looking.

Dragon!

I managed to finish off a toy dragon this weekend. Hopefully it can find some use in a game at some point.

Here it is undercoated and repaired in readiness for some paint...

And the finished miniature in all her glory...
