How Many Roman Velites to a base?
« on: 04 June 2021, 03:01:21 PM »
Way back when WRG ruled the Earth or at least the parts that played Ancients Velites were light infantry two to a base.  I'm currently painting some in 15mm. The figures are from Forged in Battle and are very nice.

As light infantry go they are quite well equipped with a helmet, medium sized shield, good sword and javelins.  They look as though the were intended to be able to fight close up as well as throw missiles.  That started me thinking that they might be considered the equivalent of Greek peltasts rather than as light infantry missile troops.

That being the case I'm tempted to have three figures to a base.  I think that will look better.

Anyone done anything similar?

Base them individually, and then build movement trays that fit 2 or three as needed.  Then you can play any game system you like.

Basing is the bane of Ancient wargaming!

ADLG, DBM, DBMM, Field of Glory use 40mm wide bases for 15mm and classify velites as light infantry with two per base.   Those ae the most commonly used tournament rule sets.   There are others that use the same basing and others that don't.   Basing them individually with movement trays will work for any rule set as suggested.

Unless you get clever with magnets movement trays usually look pretty rubbish. Looking at the way Velites were used they were definitely considered as light infantry, if well equipped ones. Interestingly Hastati were quite frequently used in a way that was similar to peltasts (particularly in Spain). I haven’t seen a set of rules that try to show this though...

Thanks for the input fellows.

I went with two figures a base in the end.
