Primer for 3D Prints

I've recently purchased a selection of 3D printed terrain and was wondering what folks use to prime/base coat it?

I usually use Gesso for most things but was thinking a spray primer might be better.

Any thoughts?

I have used black acrylic Gesso and also Citadel Chaos Black spray. Both work well.

El cheapo grey spray primer from my local hardware super chain. Same stuff I use to prime everything else. Works well, no complaints. Did wash the prints down with dishwashing liquid as part of the clean up/ prep but not sure that’s realky necessary TBH.

I've primed FDM both with gesso or acrylic spray and have had no issues.

My experience with FDM is that it may not need a primer. I get good adhesion and coverage with basic acrylic craft paints. Still, if I prime I just stick to brush on gesso. I don't tend to spray because I don't like the smell.

I've both brush and rattle can primered. Yes, you need to prime due to the layer lines being thirsty like wood. Either work, but spray is faster

Good old Humbrol enamel works for me.

I usually prime with spray in several thin layers with automotive primer unless it is clear resin.  That I do with several thin layers of Pledge multi-surface polish. Wet sand down with 2500 grit and paint with the multi surface polish again.

I use a light spray of Halfords grey primer.

Rustoleum makes a grey sandable filler primer that I use on FDM prints- it fills in between layers just enough without obscuring detail.  In the US it's available at the big box hardware stores.

I've been priming mine with Tremclad/Rustoleum Flat Black Paint/Primer, like I have been doing with my resin terrain and figures and it works well enough for me.
