Watched the new suicide squad movie and whaatttt? Takes place on an island called Corto Maltese?!!? I think i was the only person watching who knew the reference.

The name was also used in this way in one of the early series of Arrow. It may be something that got picked up by DC Comics. One still gets satisfaction from knowing the origin though.

'Corto Maltese' has been used in DC comics for a while when they needed a generic South/Latin American country.  It's similar to San Theodoros in Tintin, or any of the ImagiNations (like La Republica de los Bananas) that wargamers are so fond of.

They've been using it since The Dark Knight Returns in the 80s. I think Bane was from there too.
