Human? Gee!
« on: August 14, 2021, 04:59:08 PM »
Not sure if is the right place to put this, so moderators
feel free to move it if necessary.

Having recently seen (again) the Rock in... well work out
the film from the clue in the title of this thread. I decided
to put on a game that followed (very loosely) the idea.
Players sucked into a video game, over-coming tasks,
working together against the game & at risk of dying
in the game. That last bit was changed to, 'keeping the
figure if they made it out of the game'. Each player had
three 'lives' run out of lives & you would be out of the game,
(& miss out on a free painted figure).
To start here are the characters.
Flatpack = The Captain
Tenn-Iel = Vodkafan
The Shadow = Dicemaster
Lil Ms Dynamite = Westbury
Venus Flytrap = Digits
(This left Eddie Merks, Patch & Sheriff JP Magruder not used)

Rules were a mixture of Galactic Heroes & Krieg-Spiel.
For example, to complete a task, players had to answer
quiz questions (more about that later) while shooting
etc. was covered by Galactic Heroes.
Problems fell into roughly three main groups:-
Flora,
Fauna &
Machinery.
The first task was a team effort.
Name the countries that appeared on the winning side
of the most battles that have a Wikipedia page. This
ranged from 1115 (France) down to 76 (Egypt)
Each name that they got from the list gave them
the right to, either, ask about ANY of the hazards
(get a little insight) or save the 'points' up to help
them out later.
They asked for SOME information & kept some back.
They then failed to use the reserve at any point in
the game.
The pictures show the terrain, starting with the 'Temple'
end which is where they had to get to. They started
at the far end.
The last picture shows the compass, to show directions.
This they ignored, but that didn't seem to hamper
them at all!

Individual tasks (problem solving or when they drew a joker)
took the form of 'Name ten...' against the egg timer. Each correct
answer (i.e. ones that the umpire accepted) gave them 10%
If they failed to get 100% they had to throw (% dice) & get the
target number or less. Failure = lost a life (Players were given
three crystals 'lives' & loose them all... well already said what
would happen.

Here are some of the fauna dangers.

Gog & Magog, the final barrier the players will have
to overcome.
The Countdown marker, players began (late in the game)
to realise time was limited.
Our heroes prepare to enter the game.

At this point I will leave you gentle reader, hopefully
the players will add their views of the game.
I hope they enjoyed it.

Ok…looks like half my pics are a bust as I tried filming them rather than snapping them!

However, great fun day, packed with gk quizzes, pizzas, good humour and a cracking table full of gribblies!

Pete had clearly put a LOT of work into this and it ran pretty smoothly.  Rather than simply blasting our way across the table, we chose, working as a team to simply walk across….splitting out effort to allow redundancy, just in case a couple of us got eaten!

First we all gathered some of the previously identified healing plant stuff at our entry point however, then Bob and I decided to walk through the relatively harmless looking herbivores positioned in the middle of the table.

Gary chose to use his stealthy skill and breeze from cover to cover working his way across whilst Ian and James chose to walk through the previously identified (I ask you!) exploding banana plants…activated every time a red card was used!  Duh!

Anyway, I will concentrate on my own small part now…..(no jokes pleas)….my character, the handsome Shaft looking dude decided to inspect the power array.

I thought it probably wouldn’t be a bad thing turning off the electrickery (turns out it wasn’t).

Once the gate was open (someone else can talk about that, we moved to the open gate which placed on level 2 (or three?) in the game.  At this point, some floating orb thingys started following me….must have liked my Afro!

Now for someone else to pick up the story…..

It looks like the most interesting pics I had of the game also didn't turn out!
Here is the whole group at the beginning at the edge of the medicinal plants.

We used available points at the beginning to ask information on hazards and formulated plans..
while the rest of the group decided to sneak through the herd of grazing dinosaurs, (which was successful) the two female members of the team took another route through a field of rocks interspersed with exploding banana plants.
We made it through two turns but then on the third turn our luck ran out and two of the poisonous things blew up and caught us both.  Tenn iel lost a life here and Lil miss Dynamite was wounded, but managed to heal herself with the medicinal plant she had stored in the first turn.
Here we are almost through the rock/banana field wondering if we are about to be attacked by genestealers..

Here is The Shadow edging his way around the field of grazing dinosaurs; a tactic that was in fact to serve him well right to the end of the game and win the game for us.

Venus Flytrap, after several attempts, managed to turn off the force field guarding the chamber.

One strange phenomenon was these semi-intelligent floating balls that surrounded the team but turned out to be harmless and only curious.

Sorry none of my other photos turned out. It turned out to be a true team effort though.

More pictures from today’s game.
Great fun, and lots of effort put into today’s game by Pete.

The battlefield.

The brave warriors.

A scary place to be.

Digits and myself on the way forward.

“Where’s everyone gone ?”

Finally arriving at our objective.

No one have any pics of Big Gob and Hobnob?

After we entered the chamber, we opened up on the two guarding monsters, dropping one but keeping them occupied whilst The Shadow snuck round, hugging the walls to unlock the final task.

Forgot mention, at one point, Bobs guy harnessed one of the floating space g
Hoppers and tried to ride it into the chamber…..but the random floater had a will of its own and floated back out the gate again!  All very odd!

Not sure if is the right place to put this, so moderators
feel free to move it if necessary.

While it seems an interesting topic and a fun game you had, it's not really in-scope for the Reference board, which is supposed to collect more general threads for information and, well, reference. Therefore, I moved this topic to the Small Skirmish Game childboard, since the concept of just a handful of detailed player characters seemed to fit better there.

Thanks Westfalia. I wasn't sure where to put it.
We did have fun, even if it was quite weird.
Nice to put the players on the spot with tasks
like, 'Name 10 WW1  planes in the time the sand
runs out of the timer. A awful LOT of 'coaching/cheating
went on, e.g. Digits was given clues such as, 'Peter & Helen
have just got one of these' The others wanted him to say,
Sopwith PUP' but he, under pressure said, 'I don't know
what breed it is!' lol lol lol
