What's the size of your's???
« on: 20 August 2021, 02:34:41 PM »
Wargames table I mean.
When we were kids it was a 6x8 sandtable in the attic. When I moved into my own quarters it shrank to 6x6, sandtables had by now gone out of fashion. Standing around a 6x6 combat zone lasted us well over 40 years till old fartdom, and combatants sadly falling off their perches, meant a 4x4 table to sit around has lasted right up today.
From today the new, New Emporium at the Seaside's table has gone back to the glory days... The imperial Decree is for an 8x4 Field of Mars!

5.5' x 7'.  The first limited by my reach, the second by the size of the cellar space available.

I have come to wonder why 4' is a standard width...

Not to brag, lol but mine's a good size, at 6x4 (or 180x120cm, to be continental ;) ) and has been for as long as I remember.

I'm one of the many who started their gaming career with GW offerings, and 6x4 was basically the staple size. Every game they came out with, had a recommended table size of 6x4. Even when they started offering skirmish games such as Necromunda.

So I now have a table onto which I put 3 120x60cm modules. Plan is to make different modules with different textures/terrain; I have a desert one (x3), there'll be a snow trio, a temperate/woodland/field trio and a rubble/underhive/scorched earth trio, and perhaps even more. The idea is to store them underneath the center third of the table, with both sides able to fold down, for storage.

When skirmishing, one could easily fold up just one of the two sides, for a 4x4 (120x120) table, using just two modules.

But of course the total table will always remain a firm 6x4... :D

Our current regulations call for 2m safety distance in all activities, thus the club tables must be that deep. ;)

My latest table at home was 140 x 210 cm - enough for the usual 4'x6' battlefield and roster sheets, dice boxes, tape measures, coffee cups and pints. A side table is obviously an option, but typically all that junk tends to wander on the main table anyway. That's why I really appreciate a bit of border these days.

I have three 3x3 tables, one 4x4 table and one 6x4 that breaks down into two sections. At onetime I had a 4x12 that doubled as a playmobile table for my kids. My next table project will be one made up of 2x2 and 4x2 sections that I can put together in various ways to make potentially 12x6.

Mine can be 4x2, 4x4, or 6x4.  I have three collapsible 2x4 tables I can put next to each other as required.  I suppose I could also go for a 12 x2, but that just seems silly LOL.
PS, 6x4 is (or was pre metric) the standard size for a sheet of particle board in the UK, hence it was chosen as a basic table size to give no waste…..

I recall my brother and I would play epic wargames stretching over an entire weekend, on massive chipboards rested on top of picnic tables. I forget exactly how wide they were, but we could only reach the centre by stretching and leaning precariously, resulting in more than one fall onto the surface. Sadly the ends of the chipboard would overhang the picnic table underneath considerably and droop in wobbly fashion, so accidental falls always resulted in a 'boingy-boing' noise as the battlefield flapped its wings and hurled all models within 2ft of the edge to their doom.

No purpose built table, so I have two folding tables to produce a simple 6'x5' table - with an additional 2.5'x6' spare table that is used for holding junk - but can be press-ganged into service to give me a total of 8'x5' when needed.

The advantage of modular and foldable tables is that I can fit all three in my car (VW Golf) along with terrain, etc...so my entire set-up is transportable to various cons, houses, etc.

It's not sexy, or at a height I'd like (I prefer standing height tables with bar stools), but it's modular and has done me good service.

As a lad, I had a large unfinished basement with an 8x8 table.  I had to stand on a stool to reach the center.  Honestly, a 7 by 7 would have been better.

Since then, I have fluctuated in table size based on my space.  However, for most of my life I have been able to get a 6x4 set-up as needed.

Now, in my Hobby Room of my home (No need to be jealous all, it is not as glamorous as it sounds) I have an 8 ft x 4 ft table with storage areas underneath. I also have a portable table that can get me to 6 x 4 on the go.

14’6” x 5’

I could set it up it a little bit bigger but I don’t want my games room feeling cramped.

Did toy with having two separate tables, but I like playing with a lot of figures so one big table it is.

Giles has got a bigger one I believe  ;) :D

I *almost* clicked the "report to administrator" link as this is well past regulation size and should be reported!!  :)

(I'm jealous is all)

Mine are two folding tables that together are about 6' x 5'
