Middle Earth Dragon Rampant, Elves vs Orcs - game 2 added
« on: September 11, 2021, 02:48:44 PM »
This is our first game of Dragon Rampant.  24 point armies of Elves and Orcs.  The scenario was a stand up fight to the death.  The Elves of Lindon have come forth from their havens intent on destroying a force of orcs and warg riders sent against them from Angmar and the misty mountains.

Mostly GW LOTR figures but you might spot an odd Vendel orcs in there too.

Elven Forces
The elves were one strength point per figure as normal.

Fenmenor, Prince of Harlond and his retainers (Elite Riders, Level Headed, Fear) - 10pts
Elves of Harlord (Heavy Foot) - 4 pts
Elves of Forlond (Heavy Foot) - 4 pts
Elves of Mithlond (Light Missiles) - 4pts
Marchwardens (Scouts) - 2 pts
Total: 24pts

Forces of the Dark Lord
All the orcs are half a strength point per figure to give them the hordes that look right.

Tarkrip, a great orc chieftain, and his largest Uruks (Heavy Foot) - 4pts
Warg Riders of Angmar (Light Riders) - 4 pts
Warg Riders of Gundabad (Light Riders) - 4 pts
Uruks of Angmar (Bellicose Foot) - 4pts
Uruks of Gundabad (Bellicose Foot) - 4pts
Misty Mountains Goblin Archers (Light Missiles) - 4pts
Total: 24pts

The battle was a minor win for the orcs with very heavy losses on both sides but it was good fun and we will try them again.

The game went pretty well.  The rules are somewhat generic but that is a strength and a weakness.  They did play quickly and certainly allow you to field anything with a little imagination.  It was easy to put together our armies.  The flexible strength points system means that hordes of orcs can face smaller units of Elves with no need for special rules.  I might try this with our ancients figures.

Nicely done. :)

We had out first outing with DR a week ago and thoroughly enjoyed it as well. :)

Great looking game! Good call using half-point per figure for the orcs, it definitely gives the impression of a horde!

I played with Malamute and others a week or so ago. I also really enjoyed the game. Pricing each orc at ½ a point certainly adds to the visual effect.

Thanks for the comments all.

I found the pics of your game SI.  Nice figures and terrain.  Looks forward to more.

I do like the scale of the various Rampant rules.  It's enough to look good but not so many as to take ages to field an army.

The game looks great! I am also just getting to grips with Dragon Rampant. I have a force of Gnomes and I am going to aim to field them like you field your Orcs (i.e. a unit of Heavy Foot would consist of 24 Gnomes, but only 12 human-sized fighters). I had better get painting...

Great looking game and completely agree with the visual impact of varying unit sizes. More please!

Here are some pictures of our second Dragon Rampant game.

This time we didn't use the massed numbers for the orcs.  The Dark Lord's power was weak, or he'd had a hard day and just didn't want to move so many figures.

The Elves were holding the river line to defend their homeland from the orcish attack.

The main action took place on the Elvish left flank.

Both sides wiped each other out until only the Elf prince survived.

A fun game again.  I think I prefer the massed effect on the orcs though.

More details and some extra photos here.

Thanks Fred.  The trees were scratch built.  A wire frame with PVA and paper mache to make the trunks.  Rubberised horse hair covered in glue and flocked for the foliage.
