Help with rules
« on: October 06, 2023, 02:28:19 PM »
Hello all

The ethernal question of rules. o_o
Are there any rules for a one brain cell person (meaning very simple rules) where i can use armies based on 3cm squares or 4cm x 2cm (DBA types) for both ancients and medievals?
Armies size about 4 to 6 units per side and each unit comprises 4 to 6 bases.
I´m not interested in DBA so any alternatives would be nice.

Thank you for your help,

Rui

I’m not sure whether it is in print, but the rules in Ancient and Medieval Wargaming by Neil Thomas are like what you’re describing. I haven’t played them often but I enjoyed them.

Neil Thomas also wrote One-Hour Wargames. It covers ancient and medieval periods and has very simple rules. The nuances come from the scenarios (about are 50 provided in the book). You could definitely use armies based the way you describe. Again, I haven’t played often, but enjoyed it when I did. Which surprised me a bit, as I thought the super-simplified rules would lack interest. I was wrong about that, but it works best for scenarios.

Rui, have you tried Fantastic Battles? It's easy to learn and play and it works for ancients and mediaevals too  :)
I have used it for Punic Wars and enjoyed it a lot

One Hour Wargames sounds exactly like what you need.  The scenarios are great and the rules are very simple but surprisingly fun.

I checked on Amazon and it looks like One Hour Wargames is in print. Copies are available, in any case: https://www.amazon.ca/One-hour-Wargames-Practical-Tabletop-Battles/dp/1473822904  (the link is for Amazon Canada, but usually things available here are also through other branches)

For Ancient & Medieval Warfare it seems like only used copies are available.

'Comitatus' will work.  A great set of rules and basing agnostic.  Hard copy or download from Legio.  it wont break the bank either.

It does sound like One Hour Wargames might be what you are looking for.  If you buy a copy and find that you do want something more complicated, the good news is that a lot of people use the scenario collection independently from the rules, so you might still be able to get some use out of it.

I’ve played and enjoyed Fantastic Battles; it should work with your troops, but it sounds like it might be more complicated than you are looking for.  Here’s the author playing a game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vUHpge7UQA&pp=ygURZmFudGFzdGljIGJhdHRsZXM%3D

You could try Lion Rampant. Just give each unit 12 or 6 strength points rather than worry about the actual number of figures in each unit.
