We were discussing the Highlands miniatures stuff on the way to Partizan.
Theres some very nice looking substitute figures in the range. (Some clunky ones too.)
Because none of us had actually seen the print quality we were reluctant to take the plunge.
The birdmen are on my list of things to tweak before painting. ( totally forgot to get flight stands at the show) I picked up a set of five on eBay a couple of months ago. A couple have their hands/ crossbows missing and foot rests (unless I've lost them in the box.)
I'll be replacing their crossbows anyway  with plumbarta aa crossbows always seemed the most implausible weapons for a blokes strapped to gliders( Even in a fantasy setting).
I must confess to an urge to tweak the leader into something more Brian Blessed in nature.

just had a flick through the Dogs of War book- [...] curiously the Birdman of Catrazza were missing.
Some time back in 6th edition, the old DoW stuff from 5th edition (plus all the other mercenary units that had been released since then) was split into two lists, and later uploaded to the old GW website for free download:

1) Dogs of War. Mercenary army units from many parts of the Old World, but all of them generic units of their type (allowing players to use the various plastic regiments available for Warhammer and convert their army to their hearts' content). Most of the special characters ended up here, in particular the generals/lords/heroes.

2) Regiments of Renown. This is where all the named regiments ended up, and also any small duo/solo character units like Gotrek & Felix or Asarnil the Dragonlord. All of them can be hired into a DoW army, and many of them can also be recruited into most of the other regular WHFB armies (there's a matrix at the end which explains who will work for whom, and what army choice they count as in that army).

The list was updated a little around late 7th edition (I think...?) and remained "legal" in official games until the demise of 8th edition. The Warhammer Armies Project still keeps both books separate, and the Birdman of Catrazza are therefore in Regiments of Renown here.

I must admit to feeling a bit envious as I have always really liked the Birdmen figures. Sadly, they seem to be listed at insane prices.  If I had them I would leave the crossbows in place.

Just had a look at the prices.  :o
I won't mention what I payed but I no longer begrude the price of some flight stands.
I would have left them as originally intended if I'd got all the parts. But Plumbarta are a lot faster to sculpt than crossbows and a smarter choice but maybe not as pretty to look at.

I think I' might have some flight stands knocking about. Let me go have a look.

Some archers to support the spear.  These took  a little longer than I had intended and  I have to admit that I am a little disappointed with how these came out.

Anyways.  I had a game of ASOAF on Friday and I enjoyed it so much that I have decided to paint up more units for that so the elves are back on  the painting bench for a while.

Some lovely additions.
Just out of curiosity is that green stuff between the pieces of Cork in the bottom left hand corner?

Correct- its green stuff used to help fill some gaps between the cork.   Below is the finished piece with tuffs and raspberry jam . I mean crimson orc blood. I did accidentally cut myself while I was removing the orcs from the sprue, perhaps I should have saved the blood and used that for authenticity-lol

My opponent for A Song of fire and ice has bailed for now, so back to the Elves and Oathmark.  A unit of Lothern Sea Guard I started about 5 years is currently on the paint desk

Lothern Sea Guard from the Island of Blood set. These have been sat on my painting desk for a long time so pleased that they are done. I have another set of 10 however, I may not paint the leader, standard and musician and try and pick some up on ebay at some stage to take the unit up to 20

I spent some time on youtube watching tutorials on painting metallics,  though I fear it was not time well spent. I always struggle to paint convincing steel
