I always add bits to my forest over Christmas.  It seems more festive that way.

The second tree was modified from a simple bottle brush style tree and then re-flocked with foam material before having the trunk rebuilt and mounted on a MDF base.

How did you use thread to modify the birches?

"How did you use thread to modify the trunks"

The plastic trunks were cut and a wire insert was glued into pre-drilled holes. I then used masking tape to thicken the wire portion before wrapping the whole trunk with thread. Later when the trunk was glued in place on the base, I used DAS modelling clay to add texture to the trunk.

If I am using florist's wire to act as roots on my trunks, I also use tread to bind the florist's wire to the trunk.

I'm not sure I have any images of this but the next tree I modify, I will include an image showing the florist's wire and/or the thread binding.

Dampf you’ve turned that weird stunted, sad tree in to something lovely - bravo. As a retired Tree Surgeon I would like to offer you a job in my imaginary company: the work is hard but nonexistent and the benefits are “tree-mendous” (Apologies for the rather lame pun - how quickly we become our parents!  ).

You’ve changed it from what (I grudgingly) admit was technically almost the right shape for a mid-forest mature Picea Abies (Norway spruce or Christmas tree to most) but looked awful without the right size, scale, with a large exposed trunk etc and made it into a perfect example of a wild, young wolf tree of the same species (Wolf trees are the ones around the edge of forests - skirting around the herd of trees like wolves - that don’t have the same space/light competition and so have a different form to the main timber). You’ve rescaled it perfectly with sympathetic reduction - a technique/approach I tried to hammer into my minions but it very rarely stuck.

You’ve made the technical, chainsaw wielding climber in me and the obsessive model maker (who is also making trees currently) very happy, thank you!

Thank you. Your comments are very much appreciated and I pleased that you like the finished tree. I have one more tree to post before the end of October and would welcome your views on how it turns out.
