What glue works well for plastic board game miniatures?
« on: November 05, 2021, 02:24:14 PM »
I hope consulting the LAF hive mind can point me in the right direction.

I would like to do some modifications on plastic figures from board games (these are from a CMON game) and I am curious what glue works well. I have done a few before and used thick CA glue and pinning the join. Are there options that work better than that?

Any advice is appreciated!

Another thing to consider is the plastic itself. If it's the smooth shiney type, you may have to use a fine sandpaper to rough it up a little so the paint and glue will have something to adhere to.

Old CMON thread ends up with superglue - http://www.coolminiornot.com/forums/showthread.php?59278

They're not styrene, so plastic glues are out. I think you're probably stuck with pretty much superglue or two part epoxy.

The few Star Wars: Imperial Assault figures I've converted were not fun. Drilling out hands to replace bent light sabers got very tricky, as the material twisted with the bit, rather than staying put.

Thanks for the replies - that’s what I was afraid of!

The ones I did before with CA seem to be holding up alright, but I might get some 2-part epoxy and give that a try on a few.

Selleys puts out a 2-part system: some sort of tube CA and a primer solvent pen that is applied to both surfaces before the glue goes on. I think it's called "All Plastics" or "PlasticFix".

I've used it for head swaps on plastic figures, even the soft plastics from HaT, Revell and Airfix, and the bond is strong enough that the figures can be swung around by their brand new heads and they stay together.

It does have a limited shelf-life once opened, so I usually buy a new lot when I start a new project.

Fitz, thanks for mentioning the All Plastics glue. The Sellleys brand isn’t available here in Alberta, Canada, but the LePage brand available here has something that seems to be the same stuff (not sure if Selleys and LePage are local brands from the same parent company, or the product is manufactured under license. Doesn’t really matter, I guess, as long as the glue does the job!) I’ll look for some and give it a try, too.
