odourless plastic glue ?
« on: 23 June 2016, 12:42:16 PM »
HI,

I'm wondering if an odourless model plastic cement exists ? I have hundred of plastic minis and plastic kits to build, but glue I own have a strong chemical odour.

Since here in french south west, summer is there (about 35°C on day, 25°c on night...Hell on earth  :-[), I just can't open my bedroom windows (where my "hobby" workbench is installed) to vent the stinky chemical odour.

usually on summer time I just use normal cyanocrylate glue  instead, but bond may be not as strong as proper model glue.

Thank you !

I think the strong smell is a good thing, a little warning of what it can do to your brain if you dont ventilate...

The glue is a solvent - it dissolves the plastic then as it evaporates it welds it together.  Any glue is therefore going to have that evaporating solvent effect.  Try using sparing amounts of liquid glue rather than great gobs of the gloopier stuff.  The less you put on the less there is to evaporate.

I just mentioned it in Conquistador's 'dumping minis' topic. :) D-limonene is a citrus-based solvent that dissolves polystyrene, and is an alternative to the usual poly cements. Going by ACW Gamer's description, I'd guess that's what's in the Testors glue, though Tamiya is in on the act too.

You can also get it in larger cans, 'cos apparently it's useful as a floor cleaner and for dissolving some support materials in 3D prints. I've got a litre can sitting around here, doing bog-all. I might divert some of it into one of these thingies.

Since here in french south west, summer is there (about 35°C on day, 25°c on night...Hell on earth  :-[)

I can imagine. I suffer when the weather's just a couple of degrees higher than normal - and that's irish weather!

Just a feedback on tamiya "lemon glue" : it's a fantastic product  :-*

It's very eficient, fast (you still have time to perfectly place the parts, but it's fast enough so you don't need clampers or whatever), it smells good, but more important, it's a very discreet odour (it will not smell in the whole house if you're doing modelling).

the bottle itself is a glass one with an integrated pencil. The price is good and quantity will allow me to build dozens of kits.

Very happy !
