I said I’d put up a few pics of the two U Boats Jamie painted for me.    A couple of little bits to sort out like numbering, but these are pretty much done.  There is a second one of the larger piece to paint…..plus a couple of sub fronts to make the pen looked lived in.   I have a few sets of German naval flags to sort out, and I will need to paint a few sailors, and make a few gangways plus piles of barrels etc to make them look like they are undergoing a refit, getting ready for sea.

I found a suitable 1:50 gangway from Shapeways but with US postage etc too expensive 😩

I need to find a source of 1:56 torpedos if anyone knows where to get them?

Not 1/56 but ICM does a nice little German torpedo in 1/48 that comes with its own little trailer. It's a Luftwaffe torpedo not a Kriegsmarine G7 but I suspect nobody will notice and actually the larger scale means it probably matches a 1/56 G7.

Indeedy, those are cracking looking boats.

BTW Peddinghaus do decals for 1/48 U-boats if you don't fancy doing the extra decorating work yourself.

Wildman for 20mm crew these could be useful http://plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=792

I really love your subs Digits - absolutely cracking and they really are massive. I can't get over the size and putting one of those down on the table becomes a serious terrain piece.

Yup…that’s the plan.  And we will have three to hop on and off!  I’m thinking of ordering the Shapeways gangway despite the cost as I think it would look good.  I just ordered one torpedo to see how it looks.

We have a dockside crane, I have the harbour patrol boat to put together, I’m working on the second industrial building and I have the materials for the wharf……but I just realised….my sea mat that it will all sit on…..is only 4 x 4! Lol

Bugger…..now I need to order another larger sea mat! That wasn’t in the budget!

Not off hand but I suspect there's any number of suitable number sets available. Try Hannants.

That said, apart from pre/early war boats there doesn't seem to be too much photographic evidence of numbers being displayed, most likely a sensible security measure. The photos of end of the war captured boats with U-XXX daubed on the conning towers look suspiciously like they were painted on by their captors.

Hmmm didn’t know that……I will have to take a further look, thanks…..in which case, some of your referenced decals will be just the job.  Ta

Dave, the dockside or sub pens can be the final 2 ft at the end and doesn’t need to sit in the mat. Just up against the end to extend the play area.

As for the shapeways issue, can you just order the .stl file and get Paul Edwards at Sabotag3d to print it locally?
All the best!

Jamie.

I will look into the stl file Jamie.

As for the sea mat…it would look odd as the water into the pens wouldn’t match and it would bug me!  Also, I thought I had it covered but I want to be able to square off with my beach mat for something else I have planned so will probably need one anyway. 😏

Other bits coming together.

German Harbour Patrol boat ready for painting.

Warf side hoist for torpedo lifting.  Still needs cabling but I shall await the arrival of a torpedo, then look to have it slung I think.
