Question on Bastarnae armies?
« on: December 17, 2021, 12:15:19 PM »
I’m a big fan of Victrix models and I’m looking at new and interesting ancient projects.
I’m currently considering the Bastarnae tribes around 100AD.

Would a mix of Dacian and German warband box sets be a reasonable substitute for Bastarnae warriors?

Obviously I’d need some cavalry too, any ideas for these models?
Sarmatian figures perhaps?

Thanks in advance.

Bastarnae cavalry are mentioned as being part of forces hired then disbanded by Macedonian kings during the wars with Rome.
This site has some info on origins. Sarmatian armored cataphract cavalry might be a later development, but since the Bastarnae are enmeshed with Thracian, Scythina, and Celtic groups, I would assume that some nobles would be armored like Thracian and Scythian (who Sarmatians are part of) types, but more loose order styles than formed shock cavalry. At least that is where I left it long ago with the Bastarnae WAB lists.

Later Dacian armies could include allied Sarmatians.  Earlier might be more Skythian types, but some Thracian cap headswaps would give you some half decent Thracian light horse

For cavalry there is the gallic cavalry but the armoured persians with some head swaps might be better for a group who comprised a lot of different groups. Swapped heads could be celts, romans or dacians. They'd also need shields.
Persians might work with some gallic, dacian combos for infantry too.
