Death of Magellan
« on: 20 December 2021, 09:33:11 PM »
A project I have wanted to do for a long time, in honor of my wife, was the fight between Magellan and his Conquistadors vs Lapulapu and the Filipino warriors. The battle, which claimed Magellan's life, would work perfectly as a skirmish game. Lapulapu was credited with the kill and became a Filipino Hero. Unfortunately I have really struggled with finding suitable miniatures to work for the Filipino warriors. Anyone have any suggestions for models in 28mm I would really apricate it.

The long, straight hair and loincloths put me in mind of novice Aztec warriors. You'd have to do some converting, and I don't know where you'd find suitable weapons. Foundry offers many Aztec novice figures:

You'll shoot your eye out, kid!

And a few dayaks from Eureka, perhaps. They were of the same stock of the igorots and another tribes of Filipinas.

You could try Hawaiians. Eureka does them in 28mm.
There is also another company too I believe.

I have used some Dayaks which I had lying around to represent Filipinos of the 1700's for a project I'm working on. The illustrations I have from the period of Filipino's match Dayaks fairly well with turban type head wraps and loincloths. The shields are also a similar rectangular shape.

Eureka are your best bet. Although there are tribal differences, the appearance of Filipino tribesmen doesn't appear to have changed much until the the dawn of the 20th century, going by illustrations  and even late 19thC pics, so if there are tribesmen without firearms or western clothing in any 1898 Spanish American war these might be suitable.

Inca or Aztec in loincloth would do if you are struggling to find anything suitable, but avoid figures with any ornaments - keep them plain unless you want to add feathers from milliput

Another vote for the Eureka Sea Dyaks. Old Glory produce Moro tribesmen but they are neither suitable for what you want or sculpts worth paying for.

Magalhães was a renegade, so a it’s good to see a project where he gets his comeuppance.

He was not a renegade. He was just a guy with a business project that was rejected by his first pick for investment, so he looked elsewhere.

How about the Village Militia minis from Steve Barber's Burmese, Laos, Siamese, Chinese and Vietnamese range? Maybe a little sculpting of hair? Admitedly they are all the same sculpt but a little snipping, sawing, and cementing will alter that. Or they can be used as unit builders.
Got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight.

You would need to file back the shorts as well.

Magellan was quite well off before he defected to the Spanish crown as it happens. He bit the hand that fed him. Renegade is a relatively gentle term.

Interesting thread. I still have my copy of Dan Inosanto's book on the Filipino martial arts from 1980 ( A very, very well worn and well read copy).
The front cover features a photo of Dan with two Krises,  and an image of Lapulapu.
He mentions the combat with Magellan in the book and states that the Filipino fighters of the time often fought armed with rattan sticks and wooden spears with fire hardened points.
