15/18mm Scifi Home Away Teams
« on: December 27, 2021, 11:35:13 AM »
Hello again all,
I have various ( loads !!!)  minis that do not fall into a specific category, so I was thinking, what if I do small teams like home away teams for games like 5 Parsecs , Stargrunt etc.... Fun to make/convert & paint as I would only have a few minis.

So here is my first one. Blue oNe.
Minis are converted Armies Army now Brigade penal legion. I love these minis, simple versatile design.

The AnT's ( Autonomous Neural Trackers ? ) Drones/Droids/Engines were built so -

Heads - Earbuds ( Milliput in blue rubber press mould )
Legs -  Fire Extinguisher Lock Pin ties
Weapons/ Instruments - The front plastic bit of a flossing ( tool ? )

I decided to use irregularly shaped cut 2mm card for bases for a non standard look.
More pics on Blog.

Wow, those look awesome!

Love the scratchbuilt walkers AND the astronauts, not to mention the color scheme.

Thanks for sharing your pics and how to make the walkers.  I may have to try making some of the latter.

I do love that purple basing, Z.

Great eye for scratch building! I would have never guessed those were earbuds. They just look like some War of the Worlds style model to me. Do the lock pin ties have any wire in them to keep them bent? Or do they just hold a shape well?

Hey Z

Marvelous creations once again!  By the way, I can’t find the troopers on the Brigade Minis website:

Which ones are they?  Thanks

Very clever construction for the walkers, and colour scheme (especially the basing) is lovely! Well done.  :D

Thank you  all for the kind words.

Dan , this is the link http://www.brigademodels.co.uk/15mmSF/Figures/SF15-009.html

Cook , the ties I used were made of a harder plastic not soft polythene, they take bends & will break if enough force is exerted. If I remember correctly I had inserted short pins ( cuts of needles or thin metal hair pins ) to affix them to the card.

As to the base, the colours are more vibrant in real life & here's how to do it. Mix artists' acrylic modelling paste like this one,https://www.winsornewton.com/na/masterclass/professional-acrylic-modelling-paste/ well with the desired colour shade into an empty paint tub.

I bought 3 different types of grit   ( I now have different colour shades to use & I rarely use pva for basing anymore ) .

I have used inks, grouting colour, tile grout, sand, limestone dust, marble dust, food colouring etc mixed with it to good effect. So you can change texture & consistency.

Cover base & while it's still wet ( so wet on wet ) mix in other shades of colour. Note the paste will shrink when dry & it is very strong.

And here is the second team - Lula's Daughters. All minis are Alternative Armies except for the Darkest star terminator like droid to the left.
https://castrarunis.blogspot.com/2021/12/1518mm-scifi-home-away-team-lulas.html

Lula is the white dressed one, Juliah her Empath/Companion/Doc on the left, Shyra her pilot on the right. Tayl her mechSimian on the left . Armed guards on the rear.

Still need to do the bases.

Enjoy

As a side note the best paste grit for  basing 15mm is the fine one, i occasionally mix in the medium one & the course one, rarely.
Prepare different shades of paste or acrylic paints & blend into still wet base. You can also build on it when dry as it tends to squish if still humid.

They all turned out really good! What kind of wash do you use to make some of those details stand out so well?

Really nice work!  :-*

They have a real "Germy 10mm" style vibe about them.

Thank you for liking them.
Micropanzer makes nice minis, as I said pity that set has only 3 poses.

WM another thing,
The colour shade I use most is brown ( think W&N Peat brown or GW Nuln Oil), so I bought liquitex transparent burnt sienna, burnt umber, raw umber, raw sienna, sepia & red oxide. https://www.liquitex.com/row/products/professional/colors/acrylic-ink/?tab=versatility
These form the basis of my palette.

The 2nd most shade I use is green ( think W&N Brilliant Green see here https://www.winsornewton.com/na/graphic-art/inks/drawing-inks/#product-info-inks  or  GW Camoshade https://www.games-workshop.com/en-EU/Shade-Paint-Collection-2019)  so I got me Liquitex Permanent Sap green .
This forms the basis of my greenish mixes , you'll get superb shades by mixing with the above & the below.

Then I got the basic shades, liquitex Napthol crimson , vivid red orange , yellow orange azo & a prussian blue ( cerulean is very nice also ).

Keep in mind the undercoat colour, base colour & the transparency of the shade, filter or wash.

I also use concentrated tile grout colour . Cheap & intense colours.

This should help.
