Hello from the West Country...
« on: January 02, 2022, 06:02:18 AM »
...specifically Wiltshire.
Been here a while, lurking and making the occasional comment, but never properly introduced myself, so here goes.
I'm Geof, (yes, one "f", teenager of the seventies!) the same age as Barbie, introduced to gaming via D&D, progressed through the first couple of editions of Warhammer and eventually re-discovered historical stuff, having dabbled with little enthusiasm at school.
Now more a modeller than a gamer, I have the usual varied projects on the go simultaneously, but my primary interest is 15mm Biblical. I understand the tendency to prefer phrases like "chariot armies", but my interests lie firmly in the world of the Hebrew Bible.
I document my efforts at www.biblicalwargaming.com

Greetings. Not a period I know much about but your blog is excellent (I especially like your nod to/acceptance of author/observer bias in your source material. Something it seems many forget: the number of people that quote the ‘Hagakure’ as the be all and end all of samurai thinking without realising that the author was alienated, bitter and very definitely had a ‘katana’ to grind). I love your Kings Solomons Mines scene (I like all your scenic dioramas) and your scratchbuilt buildings are brilliant.

Thanks, all, for the welcome and the kind words.

Andrew; bias is a big problem in anything to do with the Bible, there are as many people trying to prove that it's nonsense as there are trying to prove that it's true, and the 'true' group can't agree amongst themselves. I try to base my stuff on what the Bible says, and leave what it means to clergymen, theologians and Richard Dawkins.

:D That seems a very sensible viewpoint. Your attention to small, but key, scenic elements in your modelling adds a real life and character to your work. I especially admire your building scratch builds and their interiors.

Welcome!

I too came to gaming with D&D (although I was already interested in Airfix miniatures, but the link was not obvious then, by lack of known rulesets in my country).

I won't comment about Biblical sources as it would take us too far, as you say. Just to mention that I own some black small Breton sheep, for grazing around the house, and they happen to believe that the legendary King Solomon's biscuits mine is inside the house which is the reason why we cannot leave the patio window open without care. lol

Hey, a fellow moonraker.  Welcome friend.  Which bit of Wiltshire do you live in?  I lived in Wiltshire for about sixty years until I retired to Somerset…

Welcome back to the fold, one of us and all that :)

History Channel did a series sometime ago now 10 - 12 years I think, which took some of the Battles using the Bible as an available historical record and presented them in some documentaries.

For instance the battle of Jericho, marching around it for 3 days and bringing the walls down when blowing a horn. Translated into 3 days of mining under the walls covered by the marching and yanking the supports out to collapse the tunnels and the walls when the signal horn blew.

If you can't track it down otherwise, series 1 at least not sure if anymore was released on DVD and a Youtube search for 'Battles BC' brings up some interesting results look well worth a watch for anyone interested in the field.

Hi Tarnegol, born and bred in Salisbury.  Lived there for 59 years, working at Porton Down for 36 of them….retired to Somerset in 2019, just in time for the pandemic  >:(
