It may be worth looking at the old Avalon Hill boardgame called flight leader sure it would have some mechanics you would find inspiring it was a great board game.

See: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/3711/flight-leader

Will these rules be freely available or are you hoping to package and sell them in some form?

I put them up on the Vault, and later this year pitching them around a bit further.

The market for Korean Air War is pretty.... niche.... so I expect the best place for them is probably the Vault until I can prove there is a market for them.

Oh yeah, if you are interested you can find the rules on the link here:

I think I have painted all my USAF and Communist craft.  I am mulling over if I want some USN/USMC and Commonwealth craft as well.

Love the look of the aircraft and good battle report - may unfortunately be a while before I can get these rules.

I see Warlord and Blood Red Skies has a growing range of Korean War applicable aircraft, such as the Sabre, MIg-15 in the the MIG Alley boxed set, as well as the F4F Bearcat, F-51 Mustang and the F-80 Shooting Star.  I am interested to see what else they add to their range.

There scale is a bigger than the Tumbling Dice 1/600, and the cost goes up with the larger scale too.

Here are some random photos using my Tumbling Dice collection.....

F-84 ThunderJets make an attack run on a North Korean dam in '52.  It is well protected by NK anti-air artillery.  The ThunderJet was the most prolific and effective fighter-bomber of the Korean War.

MIG-15s engage their primary targets, the B-29 Superfortress in a bomber intercept mission.  Daylight raids had to be halted in late 1950 as Bomber losses grew to be too high.  They resumed on and off again through the rest of the war depending on the strategic and tactical situation.

The first USAF kills in the war were from F-82 Twin Mustangs against North Korean La-9s near the Suwon Field airbase.  This engagement took place during the opening days of the war.

Hope to get these guys on the table for a game or three before the end of the year.

Greetings All,

I have put up some Designer's Notes on the blog for my Korean Air War game called White Star/Red Star.  Hopefully, they will give you insight into my design process for the game, and you can see if it is something that may interest you.

You can find the blog post here:
http://bloodandspectacles.blogspot.com/2022/08/wargame-design-white-starred-star.html

These were the core design goals, so take a look and see how I managed to achieve these goals in the rules.

1. Simplify flying and assume that all pilots know how to fly, the player do not have to
2. Use action economy to differentiate pilot skill
3. Make detection a key component of the game
4. Finish games quick while including critical player decision making
5. Represent the key tactical challenges and aircraft of the Korean Air War
6. Scale and Model agnostic

White Star/Red Staris currently up on the Blood and Spectacles page on the Wargame Vault.
https://www.wargamevault.com/browse.php?keywords=blood+and+spectacles&x=0&y=0&author=&artist=&pfrom=&pto=

Thanks for looking.

I noticed Warlord are continuing to expand their Korean Air War line.  They have now released F9F Panthers into the mix.  I think that gives them the Sabre, MIg-15, Shooting Star as well as any later WWII planes like the Corsairs, Spitfire and Mustang into the mix.

They need a few more Communist craft if you ask me, but no one did.

July 19th, 1950 the USAF sought to establish air superiority against the invading communist forces.  This was know as the Air Battle of Korea.  At this stage in the war, the USAF was using a combination of piston and jet engine aircraft for this mission.  The primary opponents were the North Korean air force using propeller driven late WWII era aircraft.

On July 19th, F-80's from the 5th air force took on advanced elements of the North Korean Air Force.  They engaged in a dogfight near Taejon.  In the engagement, the F-80s managed to down 3 enemy Yaks.

I am super excited to get my Tumbling Dice miniatures out on the table to see how they look and feel on the table!

Mission:
We used the rules from the book to determine the Sortie for today and came up with a Combat Air Patrol in clear weather.  This is a simple scenario to kill the other sides planes.

Forces:
We have decided to use the North Koreans and USAF lists.

USAF
3 F-80 Shooting Stars
- Experienced pilots

North Koreans
4 Yak - 9 Franks
- 3 Rookie Pilot
- 1 Experienced Pilot

Set-up:
This games starts off with both players undetected.  There is also no need for terrain, but we added some for the look.

The game is taking place on a 86 x 86 MU board.  1 MU is equal to 1/2 and inch.

Two of the Yaks are connected as wing-men.  Everyone else is individuals in this furball.

For reference, if a plane has no stand, it is at low altitude, stand is combat, and on top of a dice on a stand it is High altitude.

You can read the full report on the Blood and Spectacles blog here:
http://bloodandspectacles.blogspot.com/2022/09/battle-report-white-starred-star-cap.html

The rules are from the Wargame Vault:
https://www.wargamevault.com/browse.php?keywords=blood+and+spectacles&x=0&y=0&author=&artist=&pfrom=&pto=

Enjoy!

Nice looking minis, and the rules sound interesting.

I'll have to read over your postings, and/or battle reports, since I'd like to learn a bit more about them.

The Korean War is an interesting period.

Don't forget the British Meteors, which performed rather abysmally vs. the Mig-15s, but still are good for a challenge for the allies.

The trailer for the new Devotion trailer makes me want to pick up the US Navy aircraft for the period!

Well, that gets the adrenaline running. It is funny how everyone who remembers the Korean War refers to it as the forgotten war in which case it's hardly forgotten. What is forgotten is which countries took part with even the likes of South Africa having participated. At any rate, your rules continue to be intriguing, and still hope to give these the full throttle and take to the skies...
