28mm Mullahs and Goat herders for NWF?
« on: 15 January 2022, 07:01:17 PM »
Any costume experts here feel these shepherds are alright for the NWF? Or are they too...Biblical?

https://www.grippingbeast.co.uk/CIV13_Arab_Herders--product--5346.html

And for Mad Mullahs, Imams etc...

This seems a little too alien for the Afghans:

https://www.grippingbeast.co.uk/MOR01_Ben_Yusef_Imam--product--5598.html

This Brigade Games man seems perfect but too expensive to ship to the UK.

https://www.brigadegames.com/BG-NMO009-Imam_p_4269.html

This 1st Corps figure is billed as a Mullah...but is he? Do I even want to know what he is holding in his left hand?

https://1stcorps.co.uk/product/mullah-and-deity/

This is also a bit weird. Plus, the sculpts seem a little poorly executed. Maybe they're better looking painted?

https://1stcorps.co.uk/product/the-mad-mullah/

There's this set with a Koran waving cleric but I feel he kind of misses the mark:

https://www.artizandesigns.com/prod.php?prod=1135

This is a nice set but the praying figure looks too upmarket for a NWF Mullah.

Similarly, this Frostgrave Eastern magic user seems a bit too theatrical:

https://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=7460

I suppose this TAG Kneeling figure might work:

https://theassaultgroup.co.uk/product/taliban-commanders-and-characters/

Mongrel Miniatures does this set but a bit wasteful bc of the modern figures in the set and the fact that, again, the cleric isnt quite right for the NWF; at least not during the 19th century:

https://shop.badgergames.com/product.sc?productId=231&categoryId=73

This Pulp figures cleric is a bit too undressed:

https://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=7315

What does everyone here think?

Are there any good 28mm figures invoking Jihad that I've missed?

I quite like the First Corps Mullah. Here are my Eureka goat herders. They are much more modern.
Got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight.

Mad Guru has excellent painted examples of the 1st Corps ones here
https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=131610.45

Most of the others you listed seem too Arabic to me. I am short a mullah or two myself or would offer more examples. But the 1st Corps and the Mad Guru from Pulp Figures are safest bet. You could look at Eureka too for civilians

My frenemy CAPT SHANKS -- AKA: Gul Akbar Khan -- just beat me to replying, but I won't let that stop me!

First, MiniPigs, I want to thank you for alerting me to the fact that my namesake -- the "Mad Guru" -- is now available for sale at 1st Corps!  That IMHO pretty awesome Mark Fuller sculpt was inspired by this period illustration from an 1885 German book that I happened to post here on LAF a while back:

The ever-helpful (except to his tabletop opponents!) CAPT SHANKS posted a handy link to some pics of my painted versions, but to save you some time if you're interested, I'm posting one of both the mule-mounted and foot versions here:

They are highly-stylized sculpts, and of course everyone's taste is different, so I don't begrudge you in any way if the style doesn't work for you, even in a painted version!

Done in a different sculpting style that may be more to your liking, here are a few pics of a potential candidate for your "Goat Herder" from Empress in the Iron Duke Indian Mutiny range:

The above is a particular favorite "civilian" casting in my collection, and available in a small pack with another -- more "high energy" -- Indian Driver at this link:

https://www.empressminiatures.com/la6-2-indian-drivers-2121-p.asp

You can also get him or his colleague together with a cart, in 2 different packs viewable at this link:

https://www.empressminiatures.com/common-to-both-sides-115-c.asp

The one figure from your list that I hadn't seen before was this one from Brigade Games, which I think is a Napoleonic Ottoman Imam, and I agree with you is a nice sculpt:

I now plan to order and use him as yet another Mullah to inspire and lead my Ghazis, so thanks for the heads-up!

I’ve been using quite a few of the suggestions above but have also dipped into the civilians in the Empress Moderns range https://www.empressminiatures.com/ultra-modern-civillians-108-c.asp

A few usable figures there (except for the motorbike!).
Put your trust in God and keep your powder dry!

Much more pictures of Mad Guru's heretic mullahs at this link: https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=131610.45 and following pages. I'm happy he is going to paint another mullah, the more he deploys the more I will use their heads for buzkashi tournament!!!  lol

Mad Guru, that is some FANTASTIC looking terrain! WOW!  :o

The Mad Mullah and Mule has been out of stock over at 1st Corp for quite some time. Almost 6 months now. Just FYI for anyone wanting one.

Thanks for the compliment, Bravo Six, it is much appreciated.  I try!  Apologies in advance to MiniPigs for briefly hijacking this thread, but RE: Afghan/NWF terrain... there is a pending action in the valley of the Shakhot Pass, which after being fought (hopefully in the very near future) should be posted on the nearby "Never Trust Anyone on the Frontier" campaign thread.   In addition to the fortress tower near the pass, said valley also contains c.200 A.D. Kushan Buddhist ruins never before seen by outsiders...

Not at all, I am also enjoying the pics. Feel free to continue the hijacking.

Thanks, MaleGriffin!  But just to reiterate, while I posted the period illustration, the figure itself was solely created by the very talented Mark Fuller, who also happens to be wonderfully decent and generous, and took it upon himself to send me copies of the castings.  If you happen to read this thread, THANK YOU AGAIN, Mark!
