SCW - Book Recommendations Request
« on: 26 January 2022, 09:36:35 PM »
Hello fellow LAFers,

I have a request from my father, that I got this august body much be able to help me with. My father has started to research the 1920s, he's long retired and likes reading. He has made it to the era of the SCW. He asked if I know any good books on the civil war, especially ones that give a front line eye view from both sides. He'd like to about the very heavily biased works as he's not wanting to know the theoretical reasons that everyone was fighting, but more what they were actually feeling. I admitted I did not, but hobby interest fades after 1815, but I said I would ask. So, if anyone could please recommend a book or two I'd be very grateful!

Thanks all in advance!
Best,
Ed

Dare I say it; Homage to Catalonia by G. Orwell has a very gritty look at life at the front,it does however have some politics, although very readable. Laurie Lee also wrote an excellent memoir about his experience in Spain.

I would recommend Milton Wolff's thinly viewed fiction based on his memoirs of the war called another "Another Hill". There are enough ex library books floating about to allow access to this book at some point. Maybe an interlibrary exchange may be the best way to find and read this book. Many books have a down to earth look at day-to-day life but often are colored by ideology. Most of the English accounts are by men who feared fascism and were sponsored by socialist or communist organizations. That makes sense based on the unsettled times prior to the actual war. When reading history, you often have to understand the context of the times it was written in.
