War of Spanish Succession - 'British' Drummer Question
« on: 06 February 2022, 08:40:39 PM »
So I found a very useful site which presents info. on the uniforms and standards at the Battle of Blenheim.
However, it doesn't provide any information on British drummers.  I assume that they all have reversed facings...
Except for regiments with 'BLUE' facings (Guards Regiments) which have regular facings like the other ranks.

Then I come to the Earl of Angus's Regiment of foot.
It's a Scottish regiment, with a Scottish Standard (Cross of St. Andrew on a blue field)
And the facings are WHITE.

Continental drummers in regiments with white facings (sort of, sometimes) do not reverse the facings on their drummers,
but keep the same 'regular' facings as the other ranks.

Does anyone know if this is true for the above British/Scottish regiment at Blenheim ?
Or if I'm over thinking this, and the drummer should be a a white tunic with red facings?

Thanks,
MW

OK well first of all I would not rely on the Blenheim site you have found. The simple fact is that we just don't have details of the uniforms, flags, etc, of all (in some armies most) units at this time. So sites like this often make guesses, use the uniform/flag details of the unit from later in the century (typically SYW era) or just make them up.

On the British there simply is no information on many/most units and there is no 'usual practice' on what the drummers looked like, at least that we know of.

The unit you asked about is usually called Ferguson's at this time and I don't believe we have any idea what their drummers looked like. Indeed even the white facings may not be correct - although I would suspect this is right.

So basically you are pobably going to have to make a 'best guess' choice.
