Spencer’s Extra – Ordinary
« on: April 04, 2022, 03:05:20 AM »
I hosted a Spencer’s Ordinary game for our club. It was planned as a historical scenario. But we had more players than the historical scenario would support. So I adjusted the OB accordingly. If someone makes the effort to show up for one of my games, I try to accommodate them. It really was a fun game. Follow the link to my Flickr page, History in Miniature.

Well that's one person. Not everybody at once.

Good looking figures, and a good looking game.

Good work to adjust the game to fit extra players, can be a bit tricky to do this on the fly.

That looks very nice indeed, well painted figures on terrain that looks nice and is also practical in use.

Took a look at the flickr link. Quite the battle.  Nice looking figures and terrain.  Even with the "extra" dragoons, did the fight still feel like a Rev War battle?

Thanks for all the kind words. It felt like the AWI to me. I was commanding the Loyalist battalions on the fence line. We went back and forth. I would try to flank him and then he would me. Then the turn 10 Rebel reinforcements showed up and I pulled back to the fence line. That way I could fire in order and they would be in disorder firing at me. Woods are disordering terrain. I got the worst of it. I sent out the 84th Highland Emigrants to flank them and the 84th got flanked instead and they lost a base from fire and routed. But they recovered and came back to the fight. Aside all the horse, it felt like the AWI to me. More importantly it was a lot of fun with good friends.

Hi - sorry to be late to the party, but I hadn't spotted this thread before.  Just looked through all of your photos and it was a splendid effort - and I say that as the person who wrote the Spencer's Ordinary scenario for the British Grenadier scenario books.

I was also one of a group of wargamers who put the game on at the National Army Museum in London one weekend about 15 years ago.  We were joined by an unusually large group of American tourists, who had decided to wander through the Portrait Gallery (now sadly "updated" - ie removed) and were amazed to find something replicating their own history.  We found some chairs and got them all seated around the table, while I explained to them that virtually every person on the real battlefield was an American (save for a small company of German jaeger and a few French light infantry officers) and the only man in a red coat was the commander of a company of Loyalist militia cavalry!  "The Patriot" (spit!!!) it most certainly wasn't.
No plan survives first contact with the dice.

It was not uncommon to have battles that were between Loyalists and Patriots. The Loyalists might be under British command but not always.

Thank you for the kind comments and your wonderful AWI scenarios.

True, but generally they were small affairs - often just a re-imagining of local feuds - but an all-American action of this size was extremely rare.

Thank you.

Great looking game. Really nicely painted figures and impressive terrain.

I have just posted details of a Monmouth Courthouse AWI game and if I hadn’t complimented my own game I don’t think I would have got any comments  :)

How would you describe the rules you used? Worth checking out?
