28mm Italian Infantry from Wargames Atlantic
« on: 05 April 2022, 06:31:28 AM »

I had the chance to take a look at the new Wargames Atlantic 28mm plastic Italian Infantry set. Very impressive, cleanly cast and very well detailed, full photo review here;    https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2022/04/wargames-atlantic-28mm-ww2-italians.html

Thanks - another really useful review.

I’m no expert on Italian uniforms and gear - how early could these figures be used for?

These are cracking sculpts.

Very useful for those of us who pulp as well.

Good review. I just got the WGA Italians and am pleased with them.

Judging by the tunics and helmets, mid 1930s ‘til 1943 or 1945 for the rump of the Fascist forces.

Nice set of photos, thanks! So how do the Wargames Atlantic figs compare size-wise to Perry WW2 or Warlord?

They match well with Perrys and Warlord plastics, they are larger than the metal figures from both of those lines. I mix WA figures in my Napoleonic Prussian army with Perrys and Warlord with no problems.

Not wanting to appear to contradict Anton on his own thread, I simply have a slightly different opinion. I did not find Perry and Warlord WW2 plastics to kitbash well together. I am hoping WGA and Warlord kitbash together better.

Here is a photo I took of both WGA and Warlord Italian sprues… but I have not built either yet.

Yes difficult to say after looking at the side by side comparison of the sprues. Need to see 2 completed figures side by side. Still it does look promising.

They Perry Naps mix with Warlord but the Perry WW2 range is a different (smaller) size/scale.
They do not (IMO) mix together at all.

Thanks for the comparison photo of the sprues. When you see them side by side it does help....but also makes me still think of the Warlord WW2 plastics of more like WW2 Comics...not that that is necessarily bad but the body proportions never look right to me...and I have quite a few of them.

As for WA, they do look on the big side....but until someone is able post up a comparison pic side by side, well, you can't really tell. Just looking at the WA sprue reminds me more of the old BAM Italian Infantry (I think done by Richard Ansell...but perhaps Paul Hicks). They were tallish as I recall...I have some in the stash and will try and dig them out...if I find them! lol

Any other thoughts on any of this?

I agree that Warlord WW2 plastics have a bit of a comic book look compared to Perry WW2 but I like them precisely for that aesthetic. I find the WGA figures to be in between Warlord and Perry as far as proportions.

I'm not sure if posting a link to twitter will work here but Sonic Sledgehammer posted a really nice example using two that he had painted up.

Here is the direct link for those who want to read his thoughts on them.

That picture motivates me to either use the Warlord helmets or the WGA helmets, as there seems to be some size difference between them. However seeing as the WGA sprue has a few more head options, you'd probably get away with using them, as there's no immediate comparison there.

Shame about the helmets though.
