Osmoses' 6mm sci-fi project
« on: 14 April 2022, 10:27:41 AM »
I've been revisiting a 6mm sci-fi project I started last year. The initial idea for a setting was a 'jungle planet,' with lots of huge plant life. This was essentially an excuse to use all the spare jungle bits I'd used in larger scales, and put them in an even more exotic setting. I used some blue and red static grass to break up the green and give an alien feel. For figures I used mostly Brigade Models (UK) with some GZG. The buildings are from the excellent Brigade Models range.

A research station in the alien jungle:

An early game using Horizon Wars rules. I just used a normal green mat, and padded out the alien jungle with some terrestrial woods.

As this was a bit of a side venture, and I'm not massively committed to sci-fi, I figured I could live with the discordancy between the bases and the mat, but eventually I decided to make a dedicated mat. This was simply a case of heavy drybrushing acrylic onto the other side of my existing green cloth.

And the research station with some more jungle bits.

Some infantry bases. I made these so the bases linked up, just in case it might be useful in the future...

More of the jungle scenery done. There's still probably not as much as I would want, and I might end up using 'normal' woods to pad it out. The rationale being an attempt by colonists to introduce Terran species into an environment where the local flora was aggressively resistant to it. Or something.

And an idea of how the planet might look with a sky and some weather:

Rules-wise, I'm going to use 'Hardwar,' which is effectively a second edition of Horizon Wars, at least until an actual second edition comes out. I'm also going to give Future War Commander a go.

A really nice setup, the table looks great, and troop stand look great too. Your stands of trees look really great very nice touch. The buildings look great as well.

It would be really great to see a tutorial of how you made all of the stands of trees and other terrain.

Thanks. The terrain bases are pretty straightforward. I had a load of cheap plastic trees and ground cover plants from China, so I dunked them in a tub of cheap green acrylic to get rid of some of the plastic look. This also gave a variegated leaf effect in some cases. Some of the trees were given a coating of static grass as well. Then the plants are superglued onto an mdf base that has been covered in various colours of static grass. Gaps are then filled with clump foliage.

Great job on the buildings, those orange roofs really pop against the jungle cover.

Also, future-proofing the infantry by interlocking the bases is perfect for multiple games systems; good inspiration.
If my wife asks, I only spent half as much as I wanted to...

Thanks. Yeah, I'm guessing they'd re-paint the roofs pretty quickly in the face of an alien invasion....

I had a vague idea I might do a sci-fi version of Rommel some day, or possibly play Strike Legion Planetary Assault, and both those games use groups of bases so I thought I may as well make the bases fit together.

In similar vein, my local club has started on 6mm sci-fi as well, but they've decided to go with a 'snow planet' theme, so I've started on a force for that as well. Ground Zero Games infantry at the back, Brigade Models Power Armour, skimmers and recon with drones in the front.

Made some city bases. Initially inspired by Kaas City on Dromund Kaas in the 'Star Wars the Old Republic' MMO. Six bases, each 11cm square (which was to do with fitting in storage boxes...). All buildings from the excellent Brigade Models range.

And with a bit of photo manipulation

Nice work.  It's nice to see a 6mm project which is actually asethetically interesting.  I see a lot of 3mm-6mm projects which...admittedly are really underwhelming visually.  It's tough to get excited over stuff on the internet when it's a big field of green with microscopic miniatures you can't really make out.

I've always told my friends that if you go to 3-6mm you must invest in really cool, big sweeping tables, etc.  The terrain is going to carry the visual appeal 10x more than the miniatures in most cases.  Nice work.

Great work on the buildings - I’ve got some of those and didn’t recognise them at first as you have gone with such a different and striking paint scheme (mine a much plainer desert style)

The red blue and green flocking is certainly striking!

Stunning work! I love the jungle terrain and basing especially :)

I saw that city on FB, and it's even better here!  ;D

Thanks. It's been quite a liberating project compared with historicals. Next thing is to actually play some games...

Finished a force for the 'snow-planet' games that will hopefully be starting at the local club in a few weeks. I don't have any snow terrain myself, so I've hedged my bets with these a bit so that the vehicles on clear bases can be used on a 'desert planet' as well.

We're going to be using Hardwar rules, which are a spin-off of Horizon Wars. We've played a bit of it recently using 15mm figures, so we're going to try it in 6mm with groups of 3-base elements instead of single bases. All models by Brigade Models, some of the infantry is GZG.

More figures for the 'snowy theme' game for the club..... Inevitable really.

Very nice figures by Grumbler Miniatures.

Good job on the characters, you really brought out their iconic natures, and I also like the painting on the cavalry, tauvalry, tauntavery... mounted troops.
