Wargames Atlantic Death Fields scale comparisons?
« on: April 17, 2022, 01:08:04 PM »
I've searched high and low and can't find examples of a couple of mini comparisons. Hopefully someone here can help.

1. Einherjar compared to classic GW Squats.

2. Any of the Death Fields human troopers compared with Stargrave plastic Mercs, Crew or Troopers.

I've got classic Squats and Stargrave figs and I'm very curious to see what compatibilities might exist.

I don't have images but the Einherjar are nothing like the old Squats in height, stature or proportions. They are more like small humans with heads that are too large for them. Their weapons and kit are scaled down and as a result they don't match the GW aesthetic.

I have both the old plastic GW Squats and a box of the Einherjar and I was so uninspired by the latter that they remain on their sprues.

Thanks for that. I kind of suspected that might be the case.  No biggie though. I've got way too many Squats to paint anyway.

There are a couple of items of kit that could be repurposed (shields and packs) but the other kit is like 1/72nd scale and a bit too realistic for GW "oversized weapons".

... and the old Squat miniatures have so much character :) .

Interesting.  The Squats weapons are already considerably smaller than current GW.  I had to buy Victoria lasrifles (the only lasrifles slim enough to look somewhat acceptable on true-scaled historical figures) to find something similarly sized to the GW originals.   If the Einherjar accessories are even smaller that's pretty tiny.

Is there a chance the Einherjar arms might work with the Squat bodies or are they just too slim?

All my stargrave plastics are still on the sprue, but here's a Death Fields Raumjager next to a stargrave metal (pretty much the same as the plastics.)

YMMV but I find them a little bit bigger, I guess you could get away with it, but it put me off getting any more of their stuff.

I have this comparison:

Cannon fodder and Stargrave Trooper.

And a generic comparison:

Cannon fodder and William Killian.

Thanks for those pics hubbabubba and Ultravanillasmurf!

It would seem that the Raumjager may be significantly larger than the cannon fodder with the Stargrave falling in between.

Not sure about the Raumjager (I agree that it seems offputtingly large), but it does appear that the Stargrave Crew/Merc/Trooper parts would be compatible with the Cannon Fodder. I rather like the generic look of the Cannon Fodder, though unless I wanted a uniform crew I might just buy more Stargrave Crew sprues.

In a similar vein, I've got a sprue of Proxie troopers coming in that I plan to combine with leftover Stargrave arms and heads.  Will post a pic when I do.

I haven't been paying much attention to wargames minis the past few years, but it seems like now we're in the midst of a golden era for affordable plastic figures.   A few years ago -when Defiance imploded and Wargames Factory collapsed and their stuff went to Warlord where it tripled in price- I was pretty sure the days of $1-1.5 modern and sci-fi figs were over.  I'm pleased to see that's very much not the case.

A lot of the plastic figures are available to buy as a single sprue, on eBay. So you can get a number to compare fairly cheaply, and if you are after figures for skirmish games, you may not want a full boxful.

That's True.  I should see if anyone is selling the Death Fields by the sprue.   I went by-the-sprue for one each of the Stargrave Crew and Mercs from Recreational Conflict to give my son something to start with.  He liked them quite a bit as did my wallet since -as nice as they may be- I don't need 20 of each.

Maybe someone in my club would be willing to split a box.

Splitting boxes works well - me an my mate did that with the Stargrave launch offer - half a box of 3 boxes was loads of figures, but gave lots of mix and match options which is cool. But also so many of the plastic kits work with each other to increase your options even further.

I have Stargrave mercs and crew and WA Raumjager and Eisenkern Stormtroopers. I can take photos of them tomorrow if that helps?

Here is a picture of them . Left to right is Raumjager, Stargrave Merc, Iron Trooper, Stargrave Crew.

Unfortunately they all have been kitbashed with different heads but you get the idea! The Raumjager are bulkier with their big jackets but the arms and heads can be mixed ok with Stargrave and GW. the head on is model is actually a Chaos Marauder fantasy head.

Thanks, that's very helpful. The size and proportions are different, but not as much as I had assumed.
