Spanish-AmericanvWar,1898 Rules
« on: June 04, 2022, 09:02:29 AM »
Hi All,
Can anyone recommend a good set of rules for gaming the conflict in Cuba, and later fighting in the Philippines against against Tagalog insurgents and Moro's?

Thanks,
Andy

If you look on the 1898 website there are two very good suggestions for wargaming the period, one using Black Powder and one The Men Who Would Be Kings.

In the Defence of the Homeland. The Spanish American War in Puerto Rico with Black Powder:

The Cubans Who Would Be Kings, Wargaming the 1898 Spanish American War:

Maybe check The Virtual Armchair General.  I know they make a range of figures specific to the period and I believe they have rules for it as well.

I will throw my hat in for The Sword And The Flame. We’ve played many SAW games over the years with these rules.

Thanks for the responses guys.
Hi Atheling, yes I've used the rules amendments on the 1898 website,I was wondering if there is anything'"war specific" available.
Hi Fifteens,I have the rules and the Rough Riders supplement from TVAG,great for period atmosphere, but I don't really get on with the rules.
Hi JBaumal I will definitely have a look at TSATF,I'm sure I have a copy, somewhere.

Thanks
Andy

There is a specific set of TSATF rules for SAW, The sword in the Philippines.  See Sergeants Three.  The Virtual Armchair General has The Kris and the Flame.  Two good sets of rules.

Hi Andy,

It's not a war that I have ever played so I really can't add anything else in all honesty. :)

Thanks for the responses guys.

I'll check out the sword in the Philippines, although I believe The Kris and the Flame is set earlier than the SAW,more 1840-1860 period..

I don't know the others, but TSATF has always given me a good game. One of my favorites to the point that when collecting new figures, I but foot, horse and artillery figures in units of 20. 12 & 4 figures respectively.

MaleGriffin… based on what you say above re: TSATF… you truly are a Prince among men -- and no doubt among señoritas as well! (Had to tie this comment into the SAW somehow, to make it legit.)

TSATF has always been our go-to for SpanAm and other Colonial period games... and has done us well.

Hi chaps.
Thank you for the links,I bought both volumes of the "Rough Riders" series at a wargames show back in 1999, can't remember which one, now.
The rules are aimed at 28mm and are intended to be used with the Old Glory 25mm/28mm SAW range.

Cheers,
Andy
