I have put up a blog post that looks at getting a starter box from sprue to base, reducing base numbers per unit and gaming with unpainted plastic while units cycle through the painting queue. I have no doubt there will some strong views on that! LINK

I know a group of DBN players in Russia that all start with unpainted 1/72 armies and then paint them as they go along.  It's a morale boost for the veterans when they finally hit the table all painted.

I don't see a problem with unpainted plastic, especially in your trial stage. Heck bits of cardboard have sufficed in the past for me.  I like where you are going with this.  One suggestion would be to do away with the extra bases for the different formations.  So 2 bases can show everything - side by side in line, front to back is in square, behind and in front is column, behind and in front with a gap is march column.

Jon - that is exactly what I have done for my 28's and it works fine - I suppose I am trying to get the sense of mass with the Epics, but that does come in at more work. I think that likely I will do the two base idea while I build up say six to 8 battalions per side, which is where most of my games sit and then perhaps look at padding out.

I’m working through doing DBN first that way I can paint one or two bases at a time but vary what I do to keep enthusiastic! So starting with Quatre Bras OOB with one base to 500 foot or 300 horse

I am doing French battalions as six half-stands each representing a company. The whole battalion in line is about 170mm long. This should allow me to play “realistically” in centimeter scale. It also gives me six battalions per four sprues. The Prussians will be four company stands at 7-8 figures per stand frontage.

With 4-6 stands per unit, I can easily form any necessary formation.

In compensation, my cavalry units are 24-32 figures strong, based 6-8 figures on 40-50mm bases. My artillery batteries are three stands each.

In my teens I mostly played with unpainted Airfix figures. The ones that were painted always counted as veterans, giving an incentive to do more. ~The games were just as much fun

I'm doing the same as jon_1066, using 2 stand units.

Recently been bitten bythe Napoleonic bug again.
Initially planned to go with half size bases and 10mm figures but decided that using the considerable number of 15/18mm figures I already own was a better option.
Infantry will be 6 figures on a small FoW base (32x25mm) cavalry 2 on 30x30mm and guns on medium FoW (32x51mm)
Just need to decide on skirmishers.
